F1 has announced that grid girls will no longer feature....

A good move, an unavoidable move in the current climate, too PC....?

BBC link

I'm almost "all of the above". I liked the grid girls; I liked the 'glamour' & I liked the girls, but I get the PC bit, I get the exploitation bit (even if the girls enjoyed the attention & enjoyed the money).

Overall I think it is probably the correct move. The whole Weinstein / pay gap / abuse thing needs to be sorted & if losing the lovely grid girls is part of that process, then so be it.

Now we can just focus on the boring racing.

One of my daughters friends was a grid girl last year, she got £1800 for doing it.
While she was at Uni it was a massive income for her and she was booked to do it again this year.

Like she said "Being a Feminist is all about allowing women to make a choice, these stupid lefties are taking that choice away from us.".

She is gutted.

Why not just open it up to all genders?

Sorry, when I say gender I mean ........ well ........ oh [censored] knows anymore.

It's beginning to appear that doing things to be PC or even just "correct" is borderline discriminatory, in some instances. This, I think, might be one of those cases. If the media is to be believed, the girls enjoyed what they did and Gizze's testimony appears to support that.

Well it was my daughters friend's friend, so it might be Chinese whispers, she might have actually been paid £180 and she might have been threatened into doing it at gunpoint, who knows?

But my daughter, who works in the arts, shares a house with 4 vegans, one of whom is a gender neutral lesbian, and lives in Greenwich, so is probably considered by many as pretty 'liberal' thinks this is an absolute nonsense.

That made me hoot, but your last post did make me laugh aloud. I'd consider myself pretty liberally minded, but have to be careful of how opinions are articulated these days. My daughter's university peer group sounds identical to your daughter's!

Cheers

Your absolutely right George; be careful what you say. That's one of the reasons I'm not on FB...

Whenever we visit my brother, their children (3 of them; 15, 17, 19) usually have friends around & it's amazing, to me, to see how many of them are not just openly gay, but almost Larry Grayson-style camp. Don't get me wrong, I think it is BRILLIANT that people can be themselves these days. In my father's days, EVERY man had a short back & sides haircut and wore a dark suit to work. Going to a football match without a hat would spell social doom Now people can have hair in any colour & style, piercings in places that make me wince, can be covered from head to toe in tattoos & still be taken seriously. Even in my lifetime it was only the unemployed that could present themselves in that way. It's wonderful. But I just wonder if the whole gay thing for youngsters might almost be some sort of lifestyle choice. Their eldest started Uni last year & told me that there is an LGBT group for people to join, along with the more traditional debating society & all the rest.

Plus the Hollywood thing.... I think the pendulum has swung too far, where people are guilty at the first hint of an accusation, without the right to defence or even a hearing. I'm sure it will settle down in due course, but there is a distinctly Puritanical reek to elements of it.

I think it is a bit outdated, that wall of girls at the end is just cringeworthy, but the grid girls are happy doing it so no problem there. The company just feels it is time to move on in this era, so fair enough.

What I do have a problem with is Beverly Turner saying it is just exploits the women and shows them in a way for men to look at, where as all her photo shoots and modelling over the years have never been about that?

Not at all. She leveraged the only assets at her disposal that were highly valued in a patriarchal system in order to access a position where her true talents are now recognised and justly rewarded. She is an exploited victim who, now that she has a platform from which to do so, only wishes to save others from enduring fates of similar salacious indignity.

or

In this age of needing to maintain the right sort of profile on social media, one-upmanship in virtue signalling (on whatever the latest bandwagon of contrived outrage happens to be) might require a little flexibility when it comes to hypocrisy. If there's a small chance that the gaze of the witchfinder general might shift in your direction, you can't rely on affirmations of innocence or contrition being enough, you need to get ahead of the accusations by displaying the fiery zeal of a true believer and join in against whomever the finger now happens to be pointing. She (or her agent) probably now feels it advantageous to curate her social profile towards being perceived as amongst those leading from the front on this issue rather than as a previously willing and complicit participant in the problem.

Actually, I have no idea. I didn't even know who she was until you so kindly posted an image of her. So anyway, I really just wanted to thank you for that.

Neither did I know of her.

Leading from the front is a great asset, wish more of our politicians did so, instead of beating their own breasts in the same old way.

Well BT seems to be getting everywhere at the moment - presumably she is trying to relaunch her career after motherhood.

Still bringing up exploitation in motorsport

And getting on the NHS bandwagon - apparently going into hospital is not about just having a healthy baby, but you expect to have a gilt edge experience too.

Presumably someone else chose her outfit because of course she would want to resurrect her career based upon her journalistic and presentation skills alone. Or maybe someone just didn't dare tell her that those were not her talent and they decided that she needed to try and inject a bit of glamour too.

You know what, there is as much flesh in that photo as some of the grid girls show and often the grid girls are showing significantly less (and some times a bit more...)

I have nothing against their decision, this is the statement...
Quote:
”Over the last year we have looked at a number of areas which we felt needed updating so as to be more in tune with our vision for this great sport," said Sean Bratches, Managing Director, Commercial Operations at Formula 1.

"While the practice of employing grid girls has been a staple of Formula 1 Grands Prix for decades, we feel this custom does not resonate with our brand values and clearly is at odds with modern day societal norms. We don’t believe the practice is appropriate or relevant to Formula 1 and its fans, old and new, across the world.
The problem is the judgemental nature of 'women' against those that do not find it a problem.
Like a caller said on LBC "Yes I understand that many of these girls are annoyed as they no longer have a job, but they have to take a hit for those of us who don't feel what they do is appropriate."

Freedom of choice should be exactly that, allowing people to chose what they want to be, do or say. However we are living in a time when we are being told what we must say, do and think by a very vocal minority, and that is not right.

The Jordan Peterson interview is a perfect example of how a certain culture is trying to skew everything people say to make it a negative. Most people are genuinely nice people, but telling them they must change their vocabulary to 'not offend' is... quite frankly, offensive.

We have a generation of brain washed morons who are now at the age where they are going to cause a real divide and cause the issues they so stupidly think they are trying to stop.

A minority will always shout loudest, but they are generally shouting about nothing at all, they are preaching to those who don't need to be preached to, luckily the minority gets smaller and smaller as many in the group realise how ridiculous they are being. You get a group who all hear nothing but their own preachings all their life and suddenly something is done or said and some question it, more often than not because they are so vocal they kick those that question it out of the group, this happens more and more until you are left with just one or two shouting loudly and everyone else looks in thinking "You're nuts!".

We bumped into Beverley Turner 2 or 3 years ago while we were climbing Scafell Pike. I recognised her husband (James Cracknell) but didn't at that point realise that she used to be an F1 pit-lane reporter. I must have stopped following F1 at around the time she landed the role. We chatted to them & their son for quite a while & she was a lovely girl; completely without pretension.

Thankfully MotoGP is going to stick with grid girls.... smile

I'm sure she is, to me it just sounds like many are saying what they think they need to say. It is like Oprah giving her speech, and yet so many girls have come forward saying she has a bloody cheek as she was almost a pimp for Weinstein in the early years.

Shame they have removed the grid girls, next it will be the Halos (hopefully) or at least make them out of a see through material, surely they can do that with all the technology in F1.
