I'm new to the Raspberry world, but I understand it's very affordable. Is there any advantage building a RPi Roon endpoint for Meridian DSP speakers, over using a Meridian endpoint like the MS200 or MS600?

How can the Raspberry Pi "communicate" with the DSPs, other than sending digital audio through SPDIF?

What I had in mind was:

- Raspberry Pi > is the latest version the only thing I should know when purchasing?
- Allo DigiOne
- Micro SD card > how large? + how fast?
- OS > DietP or RoPieee recommended for my application?
- USB Power supply > could I use an iPhone USB transformer ?
- Case > any recommendation for something minimal looking, ideally metal, smooth with no exposed fasteners?

Thank you

Jerome

I love the DigiOne HAT, and recommend Allo's power supply, or better, rather than "USB" such as iPhone. See the Roon discussion Allo DigiOne board.

The advantage of the MS200 is simplicity (assuming DSPs with SpeakerLink). I don't know what the real advantage of RAAT (the Roon native transport mechanism) is over Sooloos (which is how Roon speaks to a MS200) other than the ability to mix and match the endpoints you use in a grouped set (you can group RAAT endpoints or Sooloos endpoints but not both together). For non-DSP use the advantage of the RPi is the able to stream at >96K - but that's moot in this case.

Functionally, the MS200 will allow you to control volume from Roon. This can also be done by adding a serial port to your RPi and controlling the speaker via that (there is an add-on to Roon to enable that AIUI).

Of course there's also Geek Points associated with the RPi solution smile

Be careful with the iPhone USB charger - it might not have enough grunt to power the RPi (but this is experience form a Mk1 Pi - it's possible the new ones are a bit less hungry).

I found the Pi with Digi+ sounded cleaner than the MS600 when used with an iFi PSU.

The next thing I like is the ability to add Airplay, Spotify Connect etc. etc.

I do like the ability to play music when listening on the laptop etc. or from Soundcloud on my phone straight to the speakers via Airplay.

I guess Meridian see the benefits of this as they are adding the new 210 Streamer. If they would just announce what else it offers it would be appreciated.

No Darling, I've had it months!
