My 861v4 gave up the ghost over the weekend after 15 years of solid use. I suspect the power supply as it failed before with similar symptoms: would start up, but then shut down and go around in circles. After I unplugged it briefly it won't start at all, which is where I'm at now.

Sent an email to Meridian UK support and am awaiting a reply. Hoping they still support repairs on this model as I don't particularly want to have to buy a new 861, as well as all the new boxes required to support older DSP speakers, when it's just a power supply...

So, no home cinema for me know until this is resolved frown

Hi Mark

That does sound like the power supply, but the good news is that it's not a difficult DIY fix, and at low cost too. Search the forum, IIRC it's around £40 for a replacement PSU from Farnell.

It may also be that the voltage has dropped on the 5V line, it actually has to be set to 5.2V and there is a small trim pot to adjust it.

Cheers

George

On the recent European Price List the PSU Upgrade for 861 is still available for Versions 3 , 4 and 6 from M at around €1k so hopefully you'll be sorted fairly quickly .

Thanks, guys.

There was an "electrical" smell in the room which was when I first noticed the problem, so I'm guessing failure rather than something like voltage drift.

Not impressed with Meridian. Emailed on Sunday. They confirmed receipt and will action "in due course" and still waiting... Not like the old days when you could call direct and get things turned around in a few days...

Have you tried contacting your local dealer? Meridian generally prefers that these things happen at the local level. I would assume that if you intended to do it yourself that you would have asked different questions. However, it is a very easy and economical process and may be the quickest resolution unless you opt to upgrade to the linear power supply mentioned above.

Sounds a bit like the NHS today here in the UK for those awaiting chemo.
Lack of trained staff to address customer issues? shocked

Sounds like it was an automated response?

You should consider doing the LPS upgrade while it's there.

I pinged them on Twitter and got a human response there. Twice in fact. But still no RMA details. Ho hum smirk

Haven't had a Meridian dealer since 2001 and have always dealt direct in the past with various insiders when I've needed support, but the barriers our now up it seems.

As I don't know for sure that it's the power supply I don't want to start digging inside myself, so will send it back to them and get the latest power supply intsalled...

No doubt they'll be in touch... sometime.
