Updated my system a short while ago and it hasn't gone well.

My MD600 was left with LEDs 4 and 5 flashing (in synch not alternately) for a while and now has both these LEDs lit continuously. Both hard drives fail at the same time? Would seem unlikely?

Any sage advice, apart from buy two new drives and hope that the back-up file isn't too old (I'm pretty sure there's not too many new imports that wont be on it, fingers-crossed)

Thanks in advance and Merry Christmas.

Richard

I’ve had in the past scary lights on my MD600 which were cleared by a hard (mains) reset, but not by any softer reset. Have you tried that?

I've found a hard reset (mains cycle) to be mandatory after a Sooloos s/w upgrade.

Have you tried debug to see what storage the system things is available?

The MD600 is very poor at diagnosing and notifying the owner of any issues, if a hard reset does not resolve the issue then in the past I have removed both drives and booted the MD600, it should boot ok, you can then try refitting the disks and try again, if it still fails then if they are Seagate disks you could use sea tools on a windows pc to verify the disks, this will not format the drives as the tests are non destructive, again in my personal experience the MD600 has diagnosed disks as bad that were later proved to be perfect.

I haven’t tried a hard power cycle yet. It doesn’t want to switch off at the front. Will give that a go, and if that doesn’t work try the disks out cycle too. Does it matter if the HDs get swapped right for left?

Thanks, there might be music tomorrow with luck!

Hmmm! Hard power cycle made no difference. It boots without the drives but seemed to take a while. Found by Sooloos configure program and by its IP address but Control:PC just gets the spinny thing. With the disks back in it is just as unhappy as before to solid lights for the two HDs.

Without the disks I can open debug but I have no idea what I’m looking at. With the disks in I cannot access by IP address and doesn’t show up in Sooloos config.

Reboot with disks out and leave overnight and see if the house keeping tasks tidy up a failed install of the up date?

Recommendations for new hard drives? WD blue? Vs red? They’re Seagates at present but all the ones I can see seem to be 7200RPM

Have you tried booting with the disks in and waiting approximately 30 minutes to see if it comes online?
If it does not then I suspect you may have a failed disk.

Regarding replacement disks I would not advise a 7200 drive as you will get no performance gain and it generates more heat than a 5400, I have used WD Red in a NAS with no issues, I got rid of my MD600 a long time ago I think I had Seagate 4TB drives in it?

Might be worth considering a 2 bay Qnap NAS to replace the MD600.

Thanks Russ, yes I left it a good while to come back on line no joy.

Have the first drive on test with the Seagate tools and it looks like there might be a problem with that disk at least, it’s running the “fix” program at present but looks like a new pair of disks may be needed? Will see what happens with the other.

Odd thing is that when the MD600 is running (sans disks) it won’t open with Control:PC and, having uninstalled the old version it doesn’t want to download a new version. The Qnap suggestion may be calling, (and then maybe Roon....)

The WD blue disks seem to be listed as replacements for their green disks (and are 5400) I’ve had lots of the green ones and not had a problem so far.

Hi Richard

I wouldn’t run fix, I would just use seatools to do a non destructive test, I believe there is a short and long version of the test, the MD600 seems to cause disk failures on rebooting, not sure if there is an issue there, I have helped another HH that has had similar issues with his MD600.

I think a NAS would be a good move if you are staying with Sooloos however if you are considering moving to Roon I would suggest a NUC running the free ROCK os and maybe USB drives, so some planning is required before any purchases, feel free to PM if you wish to discuss further.

Merry Christmas

Russ

Thanks Russ

The first drive had an immediate fail on the short drive test but after running fix passed all the tests I did. The second drive wasn't even recognised when installed in a spare bay of my wee HP server so I guess one complete fail and it upset the other drive! The first drive is back in the MD600 and is running and all the other stuff is now behaving. The back-up is fairly up to date so if it also goes pouf there's no major snag, two new WD red drives just ordered! I'm assuming I can just install two new drives and it'll format them and I can then just run restore? If I put in one drive in the current empty slot would it write to this from the existing drive? Would this be quicker than restore?

Yes I was getting my NAS and my NUCs mixed up, I did spend a while looking at the QNAP boxes and wondering if I also needed an OS but then realised I didn't, I didn't click at that point that it wouldn't run Roon. I'm not very computer literate, I'm just willing to have a go and often get there in the end by luck I suppose, a scatter of slightly less than optimally set up computers round the house might argue with me.....

All the best for Xmas.

Richard

Hi Richard

Well done on getting it back up and running, if you are confident the data on the ‘fixed’ disk is 100% ok then just putting a blank disk in will be ok as the MD600 will format it and synchronise it with the existing drive, if you are not certain of the data integrity I would format the current drive and install it and the new drive in the MD600, let it format them and then restore your data...... actually thinking about it I would install the two new disks just in case, my suspicions are that the MD600 can and does occasionally corrupt a disk and then falsely reports it as failed although the bigger issue is why it hadn’t reported the totally failed disk as faulty? I had a similar issue which was why I chose to abandon using the MD600 as I did not trust it.

Russ
