As we approach the festive season I would like to start a new topic on members favourite seasonal albums.
My personal favourite is The Chieftains (with many fantastic guests) "The Bells of Dublin".
This evokes life to come. Highly recommended try it and add your personal favourite to this thread.

Sincere thanks and seasons greetings to all Hitch Hikers, Hector.

Good call Hector.

My better half is always itching to put the tree & other decorations up while I try to delay it, to make Christmas more special (we compromised & put it up yesterday!). Once the tree's up I never want to take it down. So, despite no religious slant in our house, it's a special time of year for sure & of course the Christmas music plays its part. When we put the tree up, we pop open a bottle of fizz & play the first Christmas music of the year & it's almost invariably that tacky "The Best Christmas Album In The World... Ever!" It begins with John Lennon's Happy Xmas (War Is Over) & those first whispered words are a real taste of Christmas for us. The album has some real clunkers of course, but also some crackers (see what I did there?).

Beyond that, we have several carol albums which I find are always a mixed bag. For me there's no such thing as 'a favourite carol'; it's all down to the individual arrangement. I love very simple arrangements; no descants, no brass, no organ; give me a good unaccompanied choir any day. Some carols (In The Bleak Midwinter, See Amid The Winter's Snow, The Angel Gabriel) seem to be lucky enough to receive this sort of sympathetic treatment more often than not, whereas Hark The Herald Angels Sing, O Come All Ye Faithful etc always seem to be given the kitchen-sink treatment. No thanks.

One of our compilation albums has Susan Boyle (yes, she of Britain's Got Talent fame) singing Auld Lang Syne & it really is a beautiful rendition.

So, a great time of year & some special music that is made more special by only being played for a couple of weeks a year.

When we are putting up the decorations, Marj always listens to 'We Three Kings Christmas Album' (Sinatra, Presley & Nat King Cole), but for me it must be 'Strange Communion' - Thea Gilmore, 'Christmas in the Heart' - Bob Dylan, which Marj cannot stand! and 'The Nutcracker Suite' - Valery Gergiev.

John Waters’ Christmas Album. Just the right amount of saccharine with an extra dollop of extra sugar and golden syrup on top.

My daughter positively wretches when I play Little Mary Christmas remotely on her Sooloos set up at full blast to wake her up on Christmas morning. It’s almost as much fun as playing the opening bars of Thriller (album version) when she least expects it at Halloween.

Sooloos, Roon, G series (with LPS upgrade), 800 series (with LPS upgrade), HD621, AC200, Prime and PS, DSPs old and new.

Purdeys, Moke, Leica, 'Blad. Only the best.

Kate bush, 50 words for snow....

Hardly festive, but feels kind of right at this time of the year.

Ok, ok, ok, I'm going say it....

Chris Rea, Driving Home For Christmas

Yes, I know that EVERYONE seems to like it these days, but I've been a big Chris Rea fan since the 80's and when played at the right time, for me it really does mark the start of Christmas.

Likewise, Chris Rea, On The Beach reminds me of a fireworks night in Lewes... no seasonal connection, just what I was driving down to Lewes listening to.

I hope he gets better soon. My father in law has had the same Whipple operation so much empathy. Still a great voice. I guess there must be some positives to being a long term smoker.

J who runs The Little Rabbit Barn is a big Chris Rea fan and had a lot of back stage passes to shows in the early days. He also did an in-depth interview with Chris for Maverick Magazine a while ago now. They were going to see Chris in Brighton but the show was sadly cancelled as we know.
These early days are the reason the LRB exists today and J will tell you Chris Rea is a genius. We all wish him well.

My wife Claire and I saw Chris in Birmingham a few weeks ago, and he was just magnificent. I’ve played his music too since the 80’s (will never forget listening to On the Beach on a ferry between islands in Thailand in 1986). His slide guitar was as alive as any I’ve heard. Worth reading and watching:

A happy Christmas to all.

Mat

p.s. realise this is slightly off topic but I love the simplicity of lyrics in Driving Home for Christmas.

That video is a must watch for Joel. Something to keep him off the net over Christmas. 😂

Just found Trace Bundy "O Night Divine" just wonderful guitar, great for Christmas Eve or Christmas Morning, whenever you prepare the vegetables.
