I connected a new 218 and three DSP5200SEs (L,R,C) today with my legacy 7.1 surround system, replacing smiley 5000s across the front. Since the digital Aux Out on the 218 provides the first MQA unfold (up to 96k which my C61R can accept), I find that MQA from Roon through the 218 as Sooloos endpoint lets me have it both ways. I switch the front left and right SpeakerLink connections to the 218 while leaving the center speaker connected to an AC11 that also allows my DIN comms side and rear pairs to participate.

Seems to work; but now I worry about not having perfect Trifield synchronization due to processing in two separate boxes. I can more easily just listen and enjoy if the more technical experts here will spin their theories about this for me.

Another approach that I hope will spawn a technical debate might be to send simultaneous Roon MQA SPDIF from my Allo DigiOne endpoint to both 218 and C61R. Any thoughts?

Hi

Please can you confirm how you have your speakers connected?

Thanks
Tom

Why not go this way:

Roon/Tidal >> Ethernet >> 218 (SL or SPDIF) >> G61R (dig out) >> R/C/L for 2 channel sources (at the moment) and you have Mch presets like Trifield music...
This is working with my 218 and 861 at my home.

As you have now SE speakers at front, for two channel you have now the possibility to unfold full MQA as you post, but only for two channel when you go direct 218 >> L/R DSP.

As long as you have no RC correction enabled and no upsampling in the G61R.

I guess there is no difference going through the G61R or direct for R/L.
You have to try that out-disconnect all surround and center, enable Trifield preset, and then compare the sound go direct with the 218 in the DSP or through the G61R.
Don't forget to disable MRC and upsampling.

If there is no difference, then you can leave connect the 218 to the G61R to get full MQA at L/R and one step unfolded MQA at center.

As a timing shift happens as L/R get unfolded MQA direct in the SE and at the same time the center get generated at your processor, it depends which size it have to get hearable.

I guess as long it is constant, it's just like moving the center for and back. So for example 3ms about 1 meter.

Try to listen to the deepness of the stage, editing the Trifield deep with your MSR during playback is an option.
So as long it's constant, no brake here.

For communication, I guess to select the 218 when you have MQA sources is necessary to get the blue light also on the DSP, not only on the 218.

Hello Tom,

The three new SE speakers are individually connected in a "star" configuration. I chose this home run option because they will be installed inside my screen surround (and not easily accessible) when I reassemble in a few days. Any future firmware update requires a discrete cable.

SpeakerLink from Left and Right go to an RJ45 switch which can select either the 218 or the AC11. Center goes to AC11.

I have to admit that I have no clue about how the Comms should be. I currently have a BNC comms cable between Right and C61R, but I need to get this settled before the Left and Right are hidden away behind fabric.

Hi,

Do your SE speakers display MQA?

Yes, they display MQA when connected to the 218. Otherwise, they show MHR when I switch to the AC11, because C61R seems to process any input.

Thanks, Robert. I find myself listening most often to real Trifield via C61R rather than a full fat MQA decode with the 218 connected directly to Left and Right speakers. Also, my favorite source right now is the Allo DigiOne endpoint (w/ LPS and good cables) instead of the 218 using Roon/Sooloos. So I could live without the 218 altogether once Roon provides the first unfold in software. In the meantime, it is inserted into the chain when playing MQA files:

Roon/Tidal >> Ethernet >> DigiOne >> 218 (dig in, MQA first unfold, SPDIF out) >> C61R (Trifield out) >> 7.1 speakers
