I always enjoy reading the multi-channel adventures of Kalman Rubinson (occasionally of this parish) in Stereophile. He battles complex and heterogenous technologies so that we don't have to.

His recent review of the Oppo 205 was accompanied by a comment (in the paper magazine) from Oppo that the device was now capable of acting as a Roon end point.

It seems that (i) if Roon can be used to stream multi-channel audio to an Oppo 205 as an end-point and (ii) if that Oppo 205 is fed into an HD621/UHD722 via HDMI, then we finally have a reasonably elegant all digital source architecture for streaming multi-channel music playback, albeit potentially hampered by HDMI-borne jitter, that can feed a Meridian processor.

Perhaps it's not as bad as you think.

From Kal's article:
Quote:
One of the UDP-205's two HDMI outputs is labeled Audio Only. For that output, the standard video clock is replaced with a dedicated, high-stability, ultra-low-jitter, 148.5MHz master clock, based on an SAW oscillator, that uses a pattern-generator chip to create full black content.

Main system - Sources (Kodi-HTPC, Vero 4k, FireTV, Sat) into Trinnov Altitude 32 (8-16) (+Roon), Trinnov Amplitude 8 amp & Vivid Audio (Giya G3, V1.5) and REL Stentor III speakers. Others: F80 + Raspberry Pi and other Pi systems.

Why not stream to a RPi running RoonBridge and feed the HDMI out to the HD621?

Tried that. A NUC running ROCK into the HD621 is my preference.

I was unaware that was an option for multichannel. Am I correct that this would be equivalent to a Sooloos end-point?

Would this be a core device with a local end-point?

Any thoughts about the Roon Nucleus/Nucleus+ applications and capabilities in this area? Are they actually available yet?

My Intel NUC7i7BNH runs the core, connects to a USB drive with multi-channel files, and sends those into the HD621 via HDMI. Roon sees three HDMI outputs available as endpoints labeled HDA Intel PCH HDMI 0, 1 and 2. Using HDMI 0, I have to choose 7.1 Channel Layout and tell Device Setup to "swap rear and surround channels" for 5.1 into my C61R. Sounds fine to me.

I haven't yet tried to tweak SQ with a better power supply for the NUC, so please let me know if that might be worth the effort should anyone experiment with that piece of it.

They will provide MC as above. Nice case but they are not cheap and personally I would build my own.
