There has been a lot of discussion on the forum regarding the merits of preventative maintenance with respect to the resistors in older DSP5000 speakers. Less so about the benefits of changing the capacitors on the amp board. Both are well worth doing to give the speakers a new lease of life.

Based on what I have learnt from "refreshing" my own speakers, I would like to help other HH by offering component kits to the owners of DSP5000 and DSP5000C speakers.

Each kit comprises:

           Qty       Value        Manufacturer     Range

             2       1000uF 16V   Nichicon         Fine Gold
             4       100uF 63V    Nichicon         Fine Gold
             5       10uF 50V     Nichicon         Fine Gold
             2       3.3uF 400V   Ansar            Supersound
             1       680R 4W      Ceramic          n/a
             1       330R 4W      Ceramic          n/a
             1       15cm wire

Currently the kit would cost £25 per speaker including shipping to the UK.

If you are interested, please contact me via PM.

Important Notes:
  • If required, the 10uF 50V capacitors can be substituted for 10uF 63V;
  • If required, the 330R 4W resistor can be substituted for another 680R 4W;
  • Check what components you need before getting in touch via PM;
  • I make no assumption on your capability to undertake the work, and cannot accept any responsibility for any damage caused by using the components supplied;
  • I cannot promise a fast turn around
  • The cost may rise in the future
  • I am not a business, just looking to help fellow HH

I'm not in the market right now, but I'll certainly bear it in mind. Meridian might be leaving some of us HHers high and dry but its good people like you that keep the flame going. Really awesome smile

I believe the DSP5000’s are essentially the same as M60’s, but with the addition of the DSP function, so assume this kit could also be used to refresh these earlier speakers.

If anyone wants a kit for the M60, I could make one up as I think it is the same components. It would need to be confirmed though as per the 3rd bullet point.

Hi

I have a 5200HC 100189 about 8 years old. I have now changed it to an upgraded SE. As such the old 5200 was unplugged and put to one side for several days. On powering up again it keeps blowing the glass fuse at its mains socket. Enquiry has suggested, and the symptoms seem to be the case, that the capacitors have gone right down and the power board has become "defective" hence blown fuses.

I can send it back to Meridian but at the same time I am not without experience with a soldering iron and have changed capacitors and such in the past. Are you able to offer any guidance on same and how readily the back panel is removed to gain access or is their a "work sheet" available. Obviously I can then make judgement on replacing the capacitors which seems a good idea in any case.

Thank you

Have a look at these pictures:

Just undo the screws around the side of the back panel. You can take the top part only off and unplud the power cable and ribbon cable, but it may be easier to take it off as one piece.

Sorry I missed the HC. Assume very similar to remove though.

Can you post a picture of the board?

Hi

Thank you for reply.

Yes easy enough to remove once you were sure it was only outside screws to remove and a little gentle prising!

Looks the same as your photos. Have taken a couple of photos but cannot readily send? Tried copy and paste but no good. Can you help?

Thanks again

Colin

Hi

For whatever reasons refuses to accept my photo(s) even though reduced to less than 2MB.

The layout of the board is the same though as your photo.

Regards
Colin

I would look at the bank of four 6800uF 63V, two 2200uF 16V and the two 100uF 63V on the left hand side where the connector from the transformer plugs into the board. This is just a guess.

Why not while the board is removed change all the electrolytics? If you think some have gone dry, remember they were all installed at the same time.

How about some photo’s of the DSP5k’s (Does 18 bit differ from 24?).

BTW, the photo in Duncan’s stuff doesn’t look like 5K...??

The amps are the same whether 18 bit or 24/96.

Photos are on Duncan's site. There is a long thread on changing the resistors which Fiddler put some photos in.

I think it could be this photo?

DSP5000 Electronics

Very arty with what looks like a heat sink, but the electronics look accurate.

Oh, OK. Yes, that’s the photo I’m referring to. The artsy and huge heat sink panels looked nothing like what could fit in a DSP5k - or what I know of one, never having opened mine as yet.

Starting a bit off topic but where would this photo have come from? Why would they present it this way? Marketing and/or artistic license?

Anyway, it’s not really an accurate representation with respect to the top and bottom sections in a DSP5K... but best I can tell, there is no need to remove the bottom section (as described as an alternative for the 5200)?

It's an out of context DSP5000 electronics board. The electronics of the 8000 look different to that.
