Hello all,
My system for 14 years has been a 507 CD, 551 amplifier and Spendor SP2/2s.
With an upcoming house move, I have decided to adjust the system for a more room/wife friendly appearance.
The 507 CD and the Spendors are now sold and I have purchased a Bluesound Node 2 (for Tidal and MQA) and obtained some nice ex demo B&W CM8 S2s for a good price. The dealer reckoned that the speakers were easy to drive with my 551. Specs rate them as 8 ohm and can be matched to 30-150w amplifiers.

Very early on I heard sudden loud popping from the bass drivers with the amplifier set at 75. (My old Spendors could sing all day at 84). I am sure this isn't due to excessive speaker travel and more likely the amplifier clipping. It wasn't exactly playing loud.

Delving online for further info on the B&Ws, I have now found out that these speakers dip to 3 ohms in the low frequencies and require bags of current. So now I am looking at my options without breaking the bank.
I'm now considering purchasing a 557 power amplifier and using the pre amp outs from my 551.
My question is, will they work well together and power the B&Ws with ease?
Any advice will be gratefully received.

Alternatively, buy the 555 currently on eBay and bi-amp the speakers with the 551/555 combo.

My experience of big floor-standing B&Ws are that they can be the devil to drive.

The 557 should do it - it is an excellent and massively underrated power amp with oodles of drive. Expect to pay £600-£800. Listen before buying to see if the transformer hum from the chassis is present, though it is not that common.

I've thought about the 555, but I'm liking the idea of having the extra power in the tank, I think these speakers need that margin.
So a 551 can be used as a pre amp for the 557?

If you like the sound of the 551 you should find the sound of the 551/557 better as the power amplifier will not clip like the power amplifier section of the 551 will driving a difficult load. Same house sound, all Brit, will be delightful.

Okay thanks, just what I wanted to hear, thanks.
I'll heed the warning about the transformer hum, does it spell big problems?

Do a google search of this forum (see link top left of the page) on 557 and hum for various experiences.
