Hi,

I am finally thinking of taking the plunge on a 218.

Searching the forum there seem to be few comparative reviews but from what I can see there doesn't seem to be much of a difference compared to an AC200/MS200 into non-SE DSPs for standard PCM. But on MQA people report an improvement.

Would be interested in forum members perspectives who have transitioned from MS200s on non-SE speakers.

In particular, for MQA material is the improvement in sound quality significant given you can only get a first unfold?

Thanks
Tony

I sold my 818v3 and bought a 218 and I cannot hear a difference between the two with MQA or standard PCM with my legacy DSPs. With analogue speakers I would bet heavily on the 818v3. With DSP (Acourate) engaged almost everything sounds better even at the cost of losing MQA. But then my room has a very large low frequency bloom. YMMV.

Yes also. I asked Marc Koval recently, if I should get an 818 or 806. I received a thoughtful, thorough yet concise answer as to the considerations to be made in each persons’ use case. He pointed out that the hardware is always a part of the equation as well as the medium in response to a direct question. He remains justifiably proud of the technology in the 806.

I asked him which he would choose if he could only have one digital source and medium with unlimited identical content and ease of use. Then he sold me a couple of 218s. Bruce sold me a MS200. Now we are accidentally back on topic 😜
