Interesting is the MQA version of Steely Dan's album Gaucho, the metadata says it is a 5.1 mix.

Typo or multichannel MQA?

When I plugged the digital out of the 218 into the Casablanca 4 all I got was 96k static turning off MHR gave me music.

Surely MHR out into non MHR compatible kit (ie Casablanca) will not play? So what you are witnessing is not unexpected?

No Ian, just letting others know if they are plugging the 218 digital out into other equipment that they will need to do the same. The original point is that the album reports as a 5.1 mix and is MQA.

Bruce-Would you think the digital signal delivered to the Casablanca is PCM after the first unfold?

Yes, when the 218 is plugged into 8kSEs it indicates PCM on the master speaker display.

Could this coax 218 output be further unfolded by another MQA capable DAC downstream?

I assume if you wanted full MQA out of the Theta you would use the analog signal path from 218.

Not likely, as when plugged directly into the SE from the the 218, it does not unfold further. What I was trying to see was after hitting the 218, would the multichannel mix pass through the 218 digital out and be played as multichannel through the CB4. It does, however the CB4 does not have a discrete mode.

Actually, the reason that this doesn't work may be entirely due to the fact that, at the moment, SE speakers will not render MQA unless told to explicitly via SpeakerLink. This limitation/design was caused by the MQA rules at the time; that renderable MQA would be allowed on SPDIF outputs (as is now the case) wasn't even considered a possibility. Expect changes in SE speakers at some point (but who knows when).

I plugged the 218 digital out into a G65 I had on hand and the G65 indicated it was receiving 2 channel PCM. Drat, thought I found something cool.

But wouldn't it say that even with a renderable MQA signal (PCM or MHR)?

Presumably it has been unfolded in the 218. What I was trying to see was if the 5.1 mix indicated by the metadata survived the pass through the 218 as multichannel which it did not.

The metadata is just wrong. You wouldn't expect to see 5.1 tracks on CD or the other variants of data.

One for a data guy I think........VK

You do on a DTS multichannel CD.

Agree, but, I don't ever recall seeing Gaucho as a DTS CD. DVDA 5.1 and SACD 5.1 for sure but not CD.

For the DTS CD's that I have you will often see a specific entry for DTS

e.g.

I think the Gaucho example is just lazy copy/paste from the label and or Rovi or whoever.

This looks like a 5.1 CD version of Gaucho

OK...cool. There is one then.

Still it is sloppy meta data.

Strangely, it's not showing up as MQA for me through Roon or the Tidal app even though Tidal says it's Master. No little light on this one yet.

If Roon does MQA first unfold, could it pass the appropriate rendering instruction to SE speakers like this:

Roon --> MS600 --> SE speakers

Or, will it always require hardware like 218 or 818 until the rules change? Could that change be a firmware upgrade?

Not at the moment: 218 or 818 or 808 is needed. I would expect any change to be in the SE speaker firmware.
