Having signed up to the Tidal trial, I'm keen to get the benefits of Tidal's 24/96 output.

I'm aware it's available from my Mac iBook, but in my main room I'd like to use my Squeezebox Touch - on which I've installed the Enhanced Digital Output add-on. If I buy and hook up an Explorer 2, will I be able to push out 24/96 to my DSP5200s?

I've searched for a definitive answer, without any luck. Apologies if this has been covered before and I've missed it.

All the best,

Andy

Hi, unfortunately that's not going to work, as the Explorer 2 only has an analogue output.

I assume you were looking to add the Explorer 2 for it's MQA decoding, would you consider a 218 zone Controller? It's quite a flexible device but appreciate it a jump in price point.

A longer term potential possibility, is to wait until Roon implement MQA decoding and then switch Roon that can stream to the SBT.

Carl

I assume that you are currently using Logitech Media Server?

If and when Roon includes MQA decoding does that mean that using an MS200 is redundant if one already has an SBT?

Thanks Carl - and VirusKiller and spinaltap for your input.

Yes, I'm running Logitech Media Server. It's on a Windows Home Server machine which also serves as a backup device for home office files on another machine.

If Roon software is to support MQA from Tidal, I can wait for that rather than fork out £750 for a 218 zone controller. Or is there reason to still have a 218 (or a Meridian Director?) to boost audio quality (with my SBT/EDO -> DSP5200s set-up)?

Presumably, Roon would run in place of Logitech Media Server. A quick check of their technical spec. suggests to me that WHS is not supported, but I am planning a rejig of these arrangements in the autumn - so that's not a massive hurdle.

Another solution that springs to mind is to use a small-form PC (which presumably would enjoy the 24/96 output) to run the Tidal app. I'd prefer not to have a screen alongside (in my main room) and like the flexibility of having smartphones and/or tablets to call on music. Does anyone have such a setup or know of Android or Apple apps which can control this arrangement?

If you are considering Roon (and thank you if you are!) then you don't need a 218. I can't promise when MQA decoding will happen, but it is absolutely something that we want to happen sooner rather than later. Lots of platform options for running Roon, as you are obviously aware.

I use a ReadyNAS for LMS, which streams to my SBT (via Devolo HomePlugs).

My SBT has Tidal and the EDO plugin. This is connected to my Meridian Director, and then my G95. Although the SBT/EDO gives me up to 24/192, my G95 will only playback 24/96.

If you don't want to invest in Roon, my advice is to buy a suitable Intel-powered QNAP plus Meridian MS200 - thereby giving you a Sooloos/MDMS solution for direct connection to your DSP's. You would then use your existing WHS server to back-up the QNAP.

MQA on LMS

I have to say I am a little frustrated at present as it seems there is not an MQA solution for the LMS tidal plugin on the horizon any time soon. As such I currently have a laptop and sbt feeding my prime to switch between MQA and standard material, with no way I can see without adding or swapping out boxes of feeding my 5200's (albeit I did mess around with taking an analogue out of the prime and feeding back into the line input on my AC200 - not the most elegant solution but passed some time on a rainy Sunday afternoon).

Looks like a move to roon is on the cards for me..

Thanks Lee, most helpful. And Spinaltap for the comfort from sharing details of your set-up - and VirusKiller for assurance on support by Roon before too long (hopefully!).
