I've not been able to keep fully up to date with all the developments surrounding how these areas have moved on in the last few months due to heavy work commitments, but I'm keen to explore the current state of online streaming and MQA. I wondered if there's a general consensus about the current best experiences in this area.

I tried a Tidal trial a while back, but this was before any MQA, and was quite a while ago. I was wondering if they'd moved on in terms of their classical catalog in particular as it was very under curated and updated at the time? Are there any current competitors to Tidal who also have good amounts of MQA material and good classical content as well as mainstream?

How well is this now integrated into Sooloos, or is it now considered much more preferable all round to buy into Roon for a full experience?

Lastly, can one buy MQA recordings, or is it still very limited to purchase outside of streaming services?

Thanks so much in advance.

Hi Editor

Sooloos and Tidal works very well for me, but from your kit list, would it not be better to upgrade 7200s to SE to get the max benefit. Once you have 818v3 and 7200SE the world is your MQA oyster from Tidal or future possible alternatives.

Tidal is beginning to recognise the world outside of Jayzee and Beyonce in both mainstream and classical. With the addition / advent of both Universal and Sony content this situation can only get better.

This is not only about MQA but also a significant reproduction / improvement of your existing library.

I wish you success in whatever decisions you take in the future.

No regrets here Hector

Thanks, good to know that Tidal and Sooloos are working well together, and particularly that Tidal is broadening its catalogue!

I agree the 7200SE would be a good upgrade, however I'm currently lacking the £7K to make this happen. Something for the future...

I was just trying to get my head around the current state of play (pardon the pun) with Roon, and the way I'm reading it Meridian is not at all one of the most integrated partners (e.g., it doesn't appear Roon can be run with just, say, an MC200 as core, without having to run a PC full time as many other brands are now able to). Is that correct?

Correct, the MC200 does not have enough CPU power or RAM to run a Roon.

All Streamers need a computer hardward to run their software on, it's just that some devices 'hide' the fact that they are computers.

Roon can run on:
Desktop/Laptop Windows PC
Desktop/Laptop Mac
MacMini
Intel NUC i3, i5, i7 (Windows)

Roon Server (headless) can also run on:
Intel NUC i3, i5, i7 (Linux, ROCK)
QNAP NAS *
Synology NAS I

* Subject to minimum hardware specification.

Plus there is also Roon's Nucleus custom built in house hardware, announced recently, not sure of availability.

If your interested it Roon, check out the Roon Knowledge Base site ... where this and lots more is documented.

Thanks Carl. I was reading the Roon knowledge base late into the night last night. I found the many options pretty confusing so it's good to have your help!

I have historically always been particularly unhappy with Sooloos solely in regards to lack of track level metadata in classical collections and compilations, and my understanding is Roon does this better? The trade off appears to be that while Sooloos is pretty much plug and play (which I very much appreciate being only semi-technical where networking is concerned) my superficial impression is that Roon is more complex in this regard and has almost too much choice for someone like me. Perhaps one of the prebuilt nucleus units (are they running ROCK?) might be more plug n play? Although I do have a Synology NAS. Could my MC200 be used as a store and endpoint, to save it from becoming obsolete?

Oe thing which still confuses me with either Sooloos or Roon driving my 818v3 is how to get material with a higher data rate than 24/96 or DSD to it using the ID41, which I believe to be superior than a USB connection (and also I don't have a spare PC to connect to USB anyway)? Is there a current best practice or guide for this anywhere?

Many thanks.

Your MC200 can be an audio endpoint in Roon as I have used mine so. I don't know about the data though.

The best way to asses Roon is to use it. If you know someone local who has Roon, a bottle of wine may be enough to buy a ticket for an evening lol or the free trial.

I know it looks complicated, but once set up you won't go back and things seem to be improving all the time.

If you can run a NAS, I would suggest that running Roon on is simpler than that at a technical level, unless you are going through the setting up of ROCK on a NUC. Of course, Roon has many configuration and operation choices which can take a little time to become familiar with. I just use the basics.

Thanks guys.

OK I think I will try it on my Synology NAS first.

Any idea on the other question re: high sampling rates and DSD into ID41?

Forgive me if I am wrong but I believe ID41 is limited to 96K, you need SE speakers for full MQA unfold or analogue out from 818v3 to amp and analogue speakers.

Analogue out to Prime (ideally with PPS) to decent headphones is another Meridian full MQA option.

Correct. The ID41 is limited to 96/24 PCM and therefore also PCM only (DSD64 DoP requires 176k).

OK thanks. So to access anything higher than 24/96 is USB only? Or possibly SPDIF through coax and USB SPDIF converter?
