Do you think they missed a trick by not supporting other manufacturers endpoints?

That only works if you charge for the Core. Since Sooloos don't (OK, OK I know there is a theoretical price in the hardware for Core but not for the QNAP plugin) the idea of supporting third party endpoints is harder to justify economically.

Sooloos, Roon, G series (with LPS upgrade), 800 series (with LPS upgrade), HD621, AC200, Prime and PS, DSPs old and new.

Purdeys, Moke, Leica, 'Blad. Only the best.

It is ironic that since the release of Roon people have been able to add a Meridian endpoint to their existing systems comprising other vendors endpoints, thereby increasing Meridian sales and exposure. Shame Sooloos owners are denied the same opportunities.

I think it would be good if Sooloos supported Raat (or whatever it is). Then you could hook up a USB DAC like Prime via Roon Bridge to Sooloos. Or even simpler in my case, just add USB audio driver to Sooloos busybox distribution to allow USB DAC to be plugged direct into many a Sooloos core device - think it may already work with C15.

RAAT (Roon Advanced Audio Transport) is the correct name.

Yes - my view is that the Sooloos interface was such a strong selling point that even if consumers preferred their own endpoint they would at least have to buy one piece of M kit and that the M faithful would still have purchased their high end products.

I delayed my Sooloos purchase to the point that Roon became available and I bought that instead. I'm sure that if the Squeezebox was supported by Sooloos then I would have jumped in sooner and might not have moved to Roon. (easy to say now)

Maybe M should negotiate a special Roon upgrade price for its Sooloos customers and cancel ongoing support and development of Sooloos. I can't see how they can have compete with Roon going forward.

Cheers
Tom

Tom

I like many are puzzled with where Meridian are going? I think they could adopt the Roon RAAT protocol, keep Sooloos as the default software available free but offer Roon as a purchasable upgrade to Sooloos for those that want it?

The new Roon Nucleus and cheaper Roon recommended NUC kits along with the free ROCK OS software would make it a very saleable option for dealers.

I fear history may prevent any of this happening?

YMMV

I run Roon Server on a late 2012 Mac Mini, I think I paid £300 for that from Very when they were doing £100 or £150 cashback on all Macs, which they often do.

It runs it really well, can't see what more I would want, what would something at this price offer?

No Darling, I've had it months!

I sincerely hope they don't do this.

Hard as it may be for the Roon guys here, I'm perfectly happy with Sooloos. I hit play, and sublime music appears. Don't get me wrong, if Roon works for you, great. But I'm not interested in the subscription format. Which is why I won't be going down the Tidal path either.

Just another point of view!

Cheers

If you buy a lifetime Roon licence it's not really a subscription. For that you get a rapidly evolving software platform which can easily be transferred to new hardware as the need arises. Those are advantages I find hard to ignore.

Main system - Sources (Kodi-HTPC, Vero 4k, FireTV, Sat) into Trinnov Altitude 32 (8-16) (+Roon), Trinnov Amplitude 8 amp & Vivid Audio (Giya G3, V1.5) and REL Stentor III speakers. Others: F80 + Raspberry Pi and other Pi systems.

Hi Greg

Either choice is valid, have you tried Roon with free trial licence?

Cheers
