I plan to implement Roon using a Mac Mini as server feeding into my G68 and on to D6000s. (I currently use an MC200 and Sooloos).

My concern is that the only viable digital transfer from Mac Mini to G68 seems to be optical Toslink and I do not know whether this will provide high quality sound. If I had an HD621 I could presumably connect Mac Mini to G68 via HD621. But lacking an HD621 that option is not available to me...

In the meantime can anyone provide some comment on Mac Mini TOSLINK to G68?

Thanks
Paul

Try it: what do your ears tell you?

I used to feed my G95 with an optical feed from my MM without issue, particularly for 5.1 surround.

Alternatively, a QNAP feed to a MS200 will produce as good results as your MC200.

It's a cheaper option than buying a HD621.

My Mac can go all the way to XI - Mac user since 1988 - Meridian owner since 1993.

I wouldn't use an HD621 for the best audio quality; I really wouldn't!

I've not done the listening tests, but there are plenty of people out there who will tell you that the optical output on the Mac is very jittery.

My suggestion, if funds allow, would be to buy a used Meridian Explorer version ONE as a USB to optical bridge, or a similar asynchronous device from another manufacturer.

Alternatively, a Meridian Director is a good buy too.

Use the USB out from your Mac Mini.

Audio Images have a 'refurbished' one for sale.

An excellent idea that would never have occured to me. That's what makes these forums so great.

Many thanks

Thanks for the suggestion but I don't think the Director would be right for me. I want to keep the signal in the digital domain all the way through to the D6000s. My reading of the Director spec sheet says it only has analogue outputs.

Hi Paul.

I run a 2009 Mac mini into an explorer 1 via USB and then into my G68j via optical.

A/B test of optical out on explorer and Mac mini in my system found that the explorer has 'the edge' over the Mac mini but the difference was not massive. I was actually very impressed with the Mac sound card but found the soundstage slightly more open with the explorer. I would definitely recommend that route. Remember that the explorer 2 has MQA abilities I believe?!?

Kind regards
David

Just read the above after posting and agree! Doesn't have to be an Explorer.

Kind regards
David

I found there was no difference (wrt sound quality) between the optical output and USB output from my Mac Mini into the optical and USB inputs of my 518.

Not blind tested, but there really wasn't anything in it; source material was all ALAC 16/44.

Probably says more about the 518 than the Mini's outputs though.

All the best,

Steve

My thanks to you all for the suggestions, experiences and recommendations.

Based on which I have purchased an Explorer 1 as a USB to TOSLINK converter. I am optimistic it will provide a workable solution based on the feedback received. Once implemented (I need to acquire and configure a Mac Mini and install Roon and my music database) I will post my experiences.

Regards

Paul,

Is the Mac Mini going to be a dedicated machine for Roon?

If so you may want to consider a NUC with M.2 SSD and Linux as a potentially better solution.

Sooloos, Roon, G series (with LPS upgrade), 800 series (with LPS upgrade), HD621, AC200, Prime and PS, DSPs old and new.

Purdeys, Moke, Leica, 'Blad. Only the best.

As mentioned above their are other options than a Mac mini but I would most definitely be keen to hear how it goes with roon on the Mac mini as it is something that has crossed my mind to do as well.

Kind regards
David
