I see a few people have set up Roon on a QNAP 251/451 now, and I also see a few people have used the Explorer 2 with QNAP and other NAS units.

Does anyone know if Roon will see the Explorer from a 251 or 451?

Just that I need a new NAS for work and thought I could use it for trying Roon out too if I buy an Explorer.

£200 for an Explorer that I can also use with my headphones when going away, is better than £500 on an MS200 that will no doubt be replaced the week after I buy it.

No Darling, I've had it months!

Not completely on topic but I have just installed a QNAP TVS 471 i3 with Roon. This was not without issue (to put it mildly) all due to my lack of computer knowledge and skills.
But finally at 2.30 in the morning and with encouragement from Chris (The Roon Package developer) I had music.

The background analysis is ongoing but Roon is so much more snappy to use. Having an SSD drive for the Roon Core and local storage is the trick here.

The QNAP is much quieter than my TwinStore and I can use the tools to easily check drives etc. It will even email me if it developed any issues.

This wasn't cheap, but neither is Sooloos hardware which I have spent a lot on in the past.

I would expect you run the Explorer on a Roon Remote computer but more competent people will be able to say more.

Chris

Nope, 4GB RAM and a 250 GB SSD for the Roon software. It is really snappy.

Looking at the dashboard on my QNAP I observe that as the system is analysing in the background and I am playing CD quality The RAM is at 50% and CPU at 2%.

This is with only one Music disc in just now. I haven't got my back up drive in the machine yet. Also awaiting a drive delivery for mirror.

You can observe the CPU usage shoot up when you select the next track as it is analysing it this time.

96/24 see's CPU usage rise to 25% and drops back as the song progresses, but RAM stays resolutely at 50%

Just today's observations,
Chris (I must get out more)
