I noticed this evening a large number of my albums were not visible any more. The C15 only showed its resident storage 500GB.

On investigation I found TwinStore not functioning

The white light on the facia will light.
There is evidence of red glow through the top slots.
No noise from the drives nor indicator lamps that shows they are working.
Ethernet connection is also down - No activity on adjacent hub and mt Fing software shows this IP address is down.

Tried rebooting and unplugging several times but no solution

Reckon it's quite serious ...
Any ideas please?

Thanks
Regards
Huw

PS the albums are safely stored on QNAP so eventually will be recoverable.

Often cleaning connections from the power supply and replacing the CMOS battery can clear things up.

Hi Huw,

It's a small button battery about the size of a 10 pence piece mounted on the mother board.

Would be my guess too. It's a CR2025 or CR2032 battery.

Hi Gents,

I have carefully removed the top cover and inner top plate which exposes the upper side of the mother board and the rest of the works

There is no evidence of a CMOS battery - of course I suppose it could be on the lower side of the mother board which is hardly every accessible - but I will try...

NB I switched on the unit and noticed the tiny red neon lit on the motherboard.

PS It's not underneath! it's on top hidden in a slot under some cables.

It was a right game getting the motherboard out - hope I can get it back without damage.

It is indeed a 2032

Regards Huw

Ok guys some more info.

I have replaced the CMOS battery and the hard drives are powering up. Fan is working too but there is no network connection evident (as previously reported) Only one hard drive indicator light comes on presumably because drives are RAIDed - not sure about that! The drives are much quieter than I remember them - maybe because they are in idle mode.

There are no indication lights on the internal ethernet socket (mounted on the mother board, nor on my connected hub - defacto no network connection. This could mean that the network adaptor has gone or worse the motherboard. Of course we cannot interrogate. Just in case we bypassed the ethernet port on the rear of case and plugged directly into the internal socket - but no change.

There is evidence of charring on the plastic power input plug which goes into the motherboard - but it clearly is delivering power. This suggests though there has been a dodgy connection.

There is a Meridian TwinStore module plugged into the mother board - it has a jumper marked S and M - which is correct please - only asking because I may have disturbed when messing with motherboard removal.

Any thoughts please - if it is the motherboard are they available?

Thanks Regards Huw

The fact you are only getting one disk light is most likely due to a loose connector, try reseating the cables that fit to the back of the disk frames.

As for the charred connection can you confirm it is the two pin connector that comes from the socket where the PSU plugs in and goes to a small DC power board (black and red wires I think)?

Have a look at the photos of the TwinStore on Duncan's Meridian info pages, see top left of the picture. If that is it, the Meridian advice is to cut it off and solder the wires directly to the pins, typical symptoms of the charred connector are random power failures often temporarily overcome by powering on and off a few times.

Russ, Yes it is the red and black wires from the PSU. In the past I have had "iffy" on/off troubles and the charring points to that.

The issue remains, in that there is no network functionality - most other things appear to be powering up.

I tried rebooting the C15 as this sometimes finds the lost connections (I often loose my MS600 and this hard reboot usually fixes it).

PS I now have no indicator lights on the hard drives???

Thanks
Regards Huw

Also: that cable runs underneath the metal strip where the fan is connected to. The screws from the lid go through this strip, please check if it hasn't damaged the cable.

Yes I noticed this odd cable routing - will double check for damage.
Any tinkering in the area of the plug causes the unit to shut down

That sounds like the plug charring I referred to, the drives will not format if you remove them and refit them.

I notice underneath the internal RJ45 port module mounted on the motherboard (this socket appears to be dead by the way) there are also two USB ports.

Does anybody know if these are useful to interrogate the motherboard - if so how please?

Thanks

Huw,

I have a spare TwinStore boxed in my cellar at present. I could drop it in to your Cowes office over the next week or so if it would help in the meantime.

I have tinkered about with the TwinStore and all seems now to be working with all indicator lamps on when they should be, BUT there is definitely no communication, not even from the internal RJ45 port which is attached to the motherboard.

I tried a few tricks to jerk it into action but to no avail. Does not look promising.

Any more last suggestions please?

I have not been able to raise Chris at the Workshop nor am even sure he can handle this.

Thanks

No start up beeps , it is very quiet , the drives are running but almost silent , to be honest quieter than I recall when it was running well.

Both drive indicator lights are on but very dim- again I recall they were brighter in the past, but it might be my imagination.

The main white indicator on front panel is on and there is a red indicator on the mother board , just under the fan. That one comes on when the unit is connected to power but not switched on.

As mentioned there seems to be no Ethernet output. I made a direct connection to the RJ45 on motherboard, but nothing. Clearly the rest of my network including the C15 does not see the TwinStore and its fixed IP does not ping.

Is the lack of beeps an indicator of another problem.

Many Thanks
Huw

I'm not au fair with the TwinStore, but is there a VGA output on the motherboard? On MC200 there is but only available inside case? Likewise with USB and keyboard. If so, may be worth connecting a display up and seeing if it runs POST.

Maybe something as simple as BIOS expecting a key press as a result of BIOS settings change.

Ian, in the module fixed to the motherboard that houses the internal RJ45 socket there are also two USB ports.

I have a Mac style USB/RJ45 interconnect but not sure if such an interconnect helps

PS I think one can buy a USB /VGA interconnect maybe I should get one

Thoughts?
Thanks

Probably wont work as it will likely require drivers which obviously you have no control over. I've never tried one so don't know for sure but imaging it's like trying to plug an Explorer into an MC200 - there are no drivers built into the Supplied BusyBox install - if you are listening Meridian - yet another request to ship audio driver capabilities with the hardware like MC200, MD600 etc...

USB keyboard is different as it's normally built into BIOS.

No it's USB - actually 2., in addition to the RJ45, all in one tiny module.

Isn't the answer to get the data off your TwinStore disk taking up either Carl's or DPSTJP's kind offers and then abandon it and go to QNAP?

Yes Russ this might be the only way forward in the end - but reluctant to abandon Sooloos just yet

You aren't necessarily abandoning Sooloos yet if you use a QNAP NAS and load the Sooloos core or store onto that. Apart from the retirement of the TwinStore you stay as is.

Note also that the same QNAP can also run a Roon core too which gives you options again with nothing really changing hardware wise.

Nick

Returning to my TwinStore problem, I have loaded my drives into another TwinStore kindly loaned to me by Dominic. This enables me to make an updated core on my QNAP.

First observation his TwinStore beeps nicely as it boots up whereas mine is deathly silent - not even one beep. I have understood this is probably a BIOS issue and it might work if the BIOS is reflashed. Does anybody know how to do that please?

I have the unit open and the only possibility to connect is via one of two USB ports on the RJ45 module on the motherboard. I have a USB to VGA adaptor but have no clue how to proceed.

Many thanks
Regards
Huw

Hi, did you ever get the TwinStore up and running again perhaps? As I'm in a similar boat...

Can you describe exactly what issue you have?

Werner, Yes I did get up and running again quite some time ago now .

Dominic helped me out with the loan of his TwinStore, and Nick patiently conducted a neat repair. It was related to a dodgy internal connection of the main power inside the unit ( reported elsewhere in these threads) also the failed bios battery.

I messed up everything by tinkering with things I should never have touched. Nick with his steadfast expertise brought it all back to life.

So in the end it was an HH solution that assisted - thanks again to Dominic and Nick - it's been running perfectly for several months now

Best regards Huw

Hi Werner

Have a look at the following Pictures one though four, and if you want any guidance send me a pm, the fix in the case I had was to cut off a connector and solder the two wires directly to the pins, this was advised by Meridian.
