The Ultra DAC is only relevant if you stay with an analogue system.

The 818 is relevant if you move back to DSPs, but would also work in an analogue setup, although not to the same level, if reports, marketing blurb, and price are to be believed.

In either case, the ID41 card inside is a far better (reference level) Sooloos endpoint which will surpass a C15 output by far - should be the lowest jitter and lowest noise way to get the Sooloos network data into the endpoint/speakers.

Although, in a DSP setup, it might seem like something on the level of an 818 isn't doing much compared to an MS200/MS600, etc., in reality, it does make a very significant difference to sound quality.

Agreed on relevance, however the difference between the DAC in the latest 8x8 products and the Ultra DAC to the best of my knowledge has never been compared or the differences (if any) have possibly not been explained clearly.

If it is written somewhere could someone point me in the right direction.

Thanks for the comments.

Would it be fair to say then:

that if I keep my present system and want the best sound from my C15 then the Ultra DAC is the one to go for.

If I change to a two channel DSP system then 818v3 is the one and

if I want multi channel then 861v8 + HD621 is the way but two channel will be less optimal than if I had a 818 or Ultra?

Cheers

That is about right.

One possible mad extra scenario is that you could also try the 861 / HD621 combo and an 818v3 if you suspected that the 861 was not as good as the 818. I think there was a way to get that configured using 2 inputs of the DSP's.

Whilst they share the same ID41 card the 818 was said(even by M) to have the better SQ.

In all scenarios it is worth noting that the ID41 is looking a bit off the pace w.r.t. File formats that it will handle. It remains bizarre that the 818, 808 and Ultra can handle inputs on USB that the ID41 cannot. This means a user has to have a USB device attached and a media engine to service that (e.g. Roon). Meridian don't have hardware for that and Sooloos doesn't help.

Whilst John Buchanan ( M CEO) did post here of future features for Sooloos to fix this, it hasn't ever been mentioned again.

So, if you want to see DSD or 192/24 streamed native into your system then you may want to look at different ways to achieve that. If that isn't an issue then fine..no issue.

Rgds,
Nick

Might give M HQ a call on my break and ask for an update on this - I'm about to order a v2 to v3 upgrade, so it's a legit pre sales question. Will report back.

This is becoming more complicated every day! Serves me right for not doing my homework and forgetting all the configurations possible. My analogue system is starting to look even simpler!

So yes it looks as if I want the best 2 channel and multi channel then I need 818 and 861. But how do you connect the DSP speakers to make it seamless? Isn't there only one SpeakerLink connection in the speakers? If so, how do you connect both the 818 and 861 and how do you switch inputs and also how do you prevent both players responding to the remote control at the same time? I guess if there is two SpeakerLink inputs then it is simple, you just choose 2 channel or multi channel and press play.

But all the DSPs will be daisy chained so how do you set it all up to work?

The setup is a little confusing.

Grateful for any suggestions!

Now I haven't even thought about high RES stuff. Does the 861 have a USB input for high res files? Or is it just the 818?

Howie

There are two digital inputs. One is legacy so you need an AC12 or Reviver.

I have run 818 and 861 simultaneously into 8ks in this way. It works fine.

Has anyone ascertained the magnitude of difference between the latest 861v8 and 818v3 (i.e. although there may be a difference, is it really large enough to warrant a separate 818 unit)?

Also, is it worth waiting for an 861v9 to appear? No idea of prospective date/spec for this...?

I think the 861v8 has similar internals to the 818v2. The v3 is a further upgrade with MQA added.

Thanks, Edd

Everything I have read talks about the superiority of the SpeakerLink connection compared to regular SPDIF. Surely this is compromising the sound by using the coax digital input for either the 861 or 818. I presume the 818 went into the SpeakerLink input?

Great question and I wish they sounded the same. Would save me a lot of grief but since I listen to 2 channel 90% of the time and multi channel only 10% then if the 818 does sound better it seems to make more sense to get this than the 861. But if I can't integrate multichannel into my M set up then there is not much point me switching to M in the first place!
