Hello everone,

My name is Vince and I have a Meridian problem. Actually I've been watching this board for a while now and rather enjoy the quality of information found herein so I thought I'd join in. I've actually got a few questions to ask but I thought I'd introduce myself first so you kinda know where I'm coming from.

I have a few passions: My wife, Stu and Lucy my two greyhounds, anything to do with mountain bikes, listening to great music, watching great movies, and on-line gaming on XBox. I own a "serious" bike shop and my spouse is in the TV biz. I'm incredibly fortunate in that my wife's toy fetish is easily the equal of mine so I never get any flack about the latest toys.

Well it all started twenty-some-odd years ago with the 2nd hand purchase of a 101 preamp and a pair of M3s in a rosewood veneer that was absolutely gorgeous. Countless "upgrades" later, that pair of M3s was one of the few pieces of gear I regret selling.

For many years I've been a real two channel audio geek. This has culminated in a rather elaborate "hair shirt" tubed audio system in a built-to-suit room occupying one corner of our loft. With 50-plus signal and power valves all cooking away at once the air conditioner works overtime.

My analog front end is an Oracle Delphi 5/SME 5/Benz Ref cartridge. The digital front end is an EAD 8000 transport feeding a Sonic Frontiers SFD2 V3 DAC. Amplification is handled by Aesthetix Io and Calisto line and phono stages into a pair of updated Audio Research Classic 150 monos. Speakers are a pair of Merlin VSM Milleniums with Merlin's balanced battery Bam bass EQ. I run the Merlins full range and cross in a pair of Paradigm Servo 15 subs at 35Hz to fill in the bottom octave. Every wire is Cardas Golden Ref and every interconnect is balanced, even the phonos.

Now here is the hilarious part. This fall we bought a 50" plasma for the wide open living room/area of our loft. Of course, this means we need surround, right? I scrounged up enough M2s and a pair of M3s along with a (relatively) current 565, 562V3, 504 and a 208 CD. We use a cheezy Sony DVD player along with satelite, a digital cable box, and an XBox as video sources. The little active speakers are all up on 4 post Target stands now and the wiring is Meridian's generic microphone cords.

Well the speakers sound even better than I remembered, Trifield rocks and movies are a hoot! The truth is I've only listened to my two channel set up twice in the past 3 months. My wife, a tech-savvy TV producer totally loves the new setup. She finds it much easier to use with only two remotes than my all-manual tube monstrosity.

Now the two channel room still slays the Meridian set-up on Redbook CD and its the only place I can spin vinyl but the Meridian gear is just more fun. We are now seriously considering a Meridian Digital HT for the "two-channel" room.

Happy Trails!

Welcome.

Pleased to hear you are seeing the light.

I have cobbled together 2nd hand Meridian gear for years.
Currently A500 Speakers with a M33C. M1500 Sub.
M30 Mk11 Actives for rears and some Kef 70s For side channels.
Power Amp for Front and sides is a Nad 916 6 Channel Power Amp. A500's Bi Amped
All this with my 565 Z3 and My 506 CD.

A HiFi Buff Friend of mine recently came round with a 'Jackie Leven' CD that he was present for the live recording. This is his reference.
He Proudly Stated that my set up, in Chapple Mode, was the closest reproduction he had ever heard. Praise Indeed. If he only Knew how much it all didnt cost.

Meridian Back up is Fantastic as well.

Try to play with the Mulogic Mode on Studio Created Music (Dark Side of the Moon, Enigma etc). It is Real Fun.
Chris

I too used to have a NAD 916 in my 561 based system. The improvement by upgrading to a 558 was dramatic - in my case I bought x-demo, but I expect used ones crop up occassionally.
