I would add a vote for the Gyro SE.

I have a Synchro (Gyro's little sibling from the 80's) and am very impressed with the ongoing support from Michell Engineering.

It's also one of the few sprung decks you can get for less than £500 second hand (the Synchro I mean!).

Evening All,

Thanks all for the great advice. A friend is arranging for me to try a Linn LP12 to give me an idea what it all sounds like - will take it from there!

Thanks so much
Chris

Morning All,

Just wanted to update this thread to let people know I went for an Linn LP12 turntable (Accurate model with radical/urika upgrade).

Now my next question - what is the best way to connect this to the 818 - the Linn supports balanced and unbalanced connections - any opinions?.

Many Thanks
Chris

IIRC the Radical/Urika is a phono pre-amp. The 818 only provides unbalanced analogue inputs on RCA so that eliminates the XLR option.

Reviving this older tread but as vinyl gets so much press i was wondering how fellow Hitchhikers feel about playing vinyl through their M kit and or are there some tempted to get a turntable as an additional piece for musical joy?
Ditto as Tidal - MQA is dripfeeding some nice recordings now, i tell myself not to be foolish and fall for vinyl nostalgia but for the sake of a potential fun discussion looking for your opinions. I tell myself that yes a turntable is fun but it is mid life crisis, and a money trap. Or, nagging thought is vinyl nicer to listen to for instance Pink Floyd, Genesis than CD as not MQA'd, if ever?

Cheers!

Have you got a spare room to store all the discs you’ll need to buy? Ha ha

I know Roy Gandy of Rega fame and he would be happy to sell you a great turntable though. You would make his day.

No 18 in the Hall of fame smile I have simple tastes; I am content to settle for the best:
GIK monster bass panels, rear wall. QNAP TVS 471i3. Roon into DSP5200SE via 218 zone... (Thanks Russ) Explorer 2. Bluesound Pulse 2 and Mini. 596v1, 518, Foxsat HD, Sony BDP, Pioneer 5090, 2 Chromecast's for LRB videos.
My F80 is in repair...

Had my rega planer 2 since the late 80's and although it's been upgraded with better quality consumables (belt etc) it's still going strong. Quality engineering.

I remember at the time of purchase the guy said it had a lifetime guarantee, indeed!

Rega would get my vote.

Hi All,

Well I have been using my LP12 through 7200SE and an 818 and I absolutely love it. The sound is fantastic.

Now I don’t know what I am doing wrong with Tidal thorough the 818 via roon on my windows laptop but the sound is terrible - flat and lifeless. And I mean lifeless - the difference is like being in a nice warm bath vs being kicked repeatedly in the balls while having your head punched by Mike Tyson. What I mean is not subtle in any way.

My wife is a classically trained musician and she won’t listen to Tidal that way it’s so poor.

As I say no idea what I am doing wrong.

Of course there is no doubt that Tidal is way easier! I just had to replace my copy of Elgars Cello Concerto as it got a scratch in the intro.

Sorry if I missed it, are you using Sooloos or Roon to stream tidal?
