Utilising this Neet device means that there is no need to pass-through the AppleTV HDMI output through your Oppo in order to get an optical or coaxial audio signal.

This is what I will use if and when I buy the new AppleTV.

It's also cheaper than a Meridian HD621 - at just £33.

Most TVs have optical out nowadays. That's what I use.
Saves the need to connect audio from each source to the processor.

I won't be buying one.

Apple have retired (on some of their products) the VGA port, the DVI port, the HDMI port, the mini display port, USB 3.0 port, Firewire.

I've set the Apple TV up for a few people, all of them have had it connected directly to their TV (let alone a receiver). I'm pretty sure they would have acted on the massive drop in sales if there was a serious issue.

My response was valid, as there is no available documented evidence to support this.

I get that, but don't you think you could apply the same to the following?

I agree, I just checked and mine does also which should pass the surround to the 568 for movies. Now to tell the kids that hey have to keep the TV on and set the input to HDMI X just to listen to iTunes music through the stereo. smirk

As you know, I was simply speculating and, as has been pointed out, I was probably wrong; most ATV users will plug it directly into their TV... wink

Here's a *rhetorical* question though: would you prefer an ATV which re-samples everything to 48kHz on its optical output or an ATV which un-molests the nominal sample rate over HDMI? Apple has never cared or understood audio quality (other than for ticking marketing boxes), nor would it seem "necessary" in its target market.

I use the optical output on my TV to provide sound to my G68. This works just fine but I had to adjust lipsynch for this input as there is clearly a processing delay in the TV to address.

I completely agree with your sentiments. The ATV audio output is limited to Dolby Digital, rather than including DTS, for movie playback - but DTS playback would have required coaxial output at least on the ATV3 (and in Apple removing the 48Khz resampling).

Even so, some ATV users are also likely to use the analogue output of the ATV2/3 for 'basic' music playback of iTunes and Apple Music content via their audio playback device.

I'm not aware of Apple indicating the audio capability of the HDMI output on the ATV4. Some people have already complained about the omission of an Apple Music app on the ATV4 for purely music playback.

Omission of even analogue output on the ATV4 is likely to restrict its market to movie and games customers. Apple is as much about its music catalogue as it is about its movie and games catalogue, so not including some form of audio output - whether it be analogue or optical - still remains a significant oversight (in my opinion).

My present plasma doesn't have optical/coax output, and my receiver doesn't have HDMI input. So, presently, the answer is 'No'.

However, in due course, if my ATV3 expired I would have no option but to replace it with the new model - plus the additional Neet hardware alluded to in a previous post.

There is the very real prospect of a PLEX app for the new ATV4, but since I already access my movie library from my Mac Mini this isn't important to me.

I'll probably buy one and replace my ATV 3 purely because it will have Plex on it. I go into my HD621 on HDMI so no change on wiring for me.

That finally gives me a way of putting a decent "over the top" wrap around all my disparate media movie TV content stored on my NAS, with a cool front end that goes and grabs metadata from their service and makes it all pretty to find, discover and watch.

....a bit like Roon for movies, and a heap cheaper than a Kalidascape!!!
