Hi everyone.

First of all, my apologies for very newbie question, and I would truly appreciate it if you can direct me to any posts which has answer to my question.

The question is simple.. I am using MD600 and MS200, and thinking about using Roon only, (retiring my MD600 completely). I currently do not have Qnap nor any backups.

1. Do I still need Qnap for store? given Roon is just a core.
2. Or Can I just use any storage that is connected to PC where Roon is installed?
3. How can I safely import my music files in MD600 to any storage for Roon to work? (Backup my music in MD600 to external HD, and then importing them to Roon?) - step by step explanation would be most highly appreciated!

Thank You very much!!

1) you don't need a QNAP (I don't own one...Roon runs fine) ...

2) as long as your file server speaks SMB protocol (almost all do) you're all set. I use a Freebsd based file server, and it works fine.

3) you must export from your Sooloos installation or point Roon at your existing, separate music library (I never got rid of my Sonos library, I just pointed Roon at it and indexed it).

Roon imported all of my digital music except the 5.1 FLAC files. Very impressed and looking forward to the iPad app :-)

Thank You MJ, for the clarifications.

For #2, in other words, I just need a PC with say 3GB internal HD (or 3G external HD), I don't event need separate NAS to store my music files?

For #3.. I am not sure if I understand the procedure clearly.

1. I perform normal Sooloos backup using the core in the MD600 to any external storage (e.g. external HD),
2. plug this external HD with backed up music files (I assume the file would be not in playable format) to the PC where Roon is installed
3. Run Roon, and "import" these backup file (to internal HD, or another external HD). Is Roon going to convert this back up file to playable format?

or

1. While MD600 is in the same network with Roon installed PC, I tell Roon to locate the music files in the MD600
2. Command Roon to import the music files in the MD600 to whichever format that Roon can play, to any designated location (e.g. D:\ in internal HD)

The plan here is to remove my MD600 from my system, but securing the files.

Thank You!

You may mean 3 TB hard drives?
You need to EXPORT your Sooloos library in NATIVE (FLAC) format to the drive you will be using for Roon.
Export and Back up are different. The export will take some time depending on the size of you library.
Then point Roon at the new library and your good to go.

Thank You Chris,

Yes, I meant 3 T.. =)

As far as I remember, Sooloos only allows exporting the music files in to MP3 (maximum quality) using the Control:PC. But you are suggesting that I can export them in FLAC as well? Something I need to check.

Thank You!

Cujo

You export in native mode, you are getting confused with converting to MP3.

Cheers
