Hi All

Some positive information from Meridian on the future firmware updating of streaming endpoints if you are running Roon rather than Sooloos.

Cheers

Russ

Hi Russ,

Just read the topic; that's good news for us it would have been a PITA to have to hook up to a Sooloos broker (Core) just to get the firmware updated.

Regards,
Carl

It's good. I am sure that HQ realise that they will probably sell a lot more end points given the cost of the core and store is now different. The easier the management of end zone units can be; the better.

More good news from Des, our support guru (with permission):

In the meantime, I can tell you that we will soon have an update method which does not require the presence of a Sooloos product. We will be introducing support for QNAP to run Sooloos core. This will feature the ability to update end-points. I appreciate that this would involve a fair bit of IT reconfiguration to carry out the update (and you need to have a QNAP!), but at least it offers the option of updating without a Sooloos product in the system.

That's useful progress.

The last scenario that therefore needs to be supported is for the new user who buys an 808v5/ID41 or MS600, MS200 to go with their Roon server (i.e. the user was never a Sooloos owner so has no experience of Sooloos core, store plugins on QNAP)

These are clearly legitimate customers and users of Meridian end-points so hopefully Des and the gang will be able to confirm support for that scenario too. QNAP running Sooloos core shouldn't be a pre-requisite for maintaining firmware updates.

If it is like updating firmware or DVD regions codes etc on other M hardware then it should be quite manageable.

Nick

Agree, or those poor sods like me that have two half decent Synology NASs at home.

I'm taking hope from the first paragraph....

Two potential (or perhaps three) options :-

1a) Buy a QNAP NAS & use it - and install the headless Sooloos core.

1b) Buy a QNAP NAS & "don't" use it - just install the headless Sooloos core for updating purposes & hide it from SWMBO under the stairs when not in use. Perhaps achievable for £250 or even less?

2) Insist that your friendly local dealer follows option 1b) and ships the NAS around to all their customers as soon as an update comes out.

However, I would imagine that everyone would prefer the "Zero Option" of being able to update themselves or through a Dealer via USB or some other reflash tool...

A Windows-based Sooloos core is my preferred option then I could enjoy both platforms wink

Main system - Sources (Kodi-HTPC, Vero 4k, FireTV, Sat) into Trinnov Altitude 32 (8-16) (+Roon), Trinnov Amplitude 8 amp & Vivid Audio (Giya G3, V1.5) and REL Stentor III speakers. Others: F80 + Raspberry Pi and other Pi systems.

Docker (Linux) support on Sooloos would be nice, that would open up for all modern more high-powered intel NASes. Same for Roon.
