How do I add my Sooloos library that's on my MC200. What commands on a MAC?

Also how do I use Roon and still have the output going to my 808 endpoint?

Sorry, I'm lost.

I exported my Sooloos library in NATIVE format to a new hard drive and used that to run Roon temporarily on a laptop with the hard drive in an Icybox via USB 3
I have the laptop hard wired to my network.

The Roon software finds my MS200 end points, so all I do is select one.

At the moment you may have problems with both Sooloos and Roon cores running together.
You would have to turn off the Sooloos core ideally. It should see the MC200 endpoint.

Your MC200 acts as a Samba drive on your network. All you need to do is point Roon at SMB:\\<IP address of MC200>\Music\Music2

Personally I think the suggestion of doing an export from your MC200 to a different drive is more sensible due to the unintuitive folder structure of Sooloos causing more issues with Roon's metadata library creation than necessary.

Sooloos, Roon, G series (with LPS upgrade), 800 series (with LPS upgrade), HD621, AC200, Prime and PS, DSPs old and new.

Purdeys, Moke, Leica, 'Blad. Only the best.

Hi

Here is a guide to mount smb share in OSX use this in combination with dpstjp's guidance in the post above.

AFAIK...HQ and Roon are still finalising the options for Roon reading directly the Sooloos store info. I think recent HQ messages touched on this.

So, for now, a native export is the tested way to go.

Hold on a while and the Sooloos store reading option may surface.

This will be a neat option for those that simply want to add the Roon control but leave the rest of Sooloos intact (initial rip/import, MD600, TwinStores, etc).

I am sure either BobS or Danny will be able to confirm this at some point very soon.

Nick

I tried adding the SMB command as suggested with the IP address and the folder \music\music 2 and I still get a message back indicating "Invalid network path".

I think I am giving up until Meridian and Roon work this out. I don't have another drive to export to.

Waking myself up.

I was adding the SMB command with IP into the Network field in Roon.

I went back and mounted it using the
Code:
GO-->Connect to Server--> SMB://...
field then pointed at the correct music files.

Now I just have to figure out how to get sound from the 808's outputs and not just my laptop. I checked the 808 but it continued playing via the laptop.

Albert, as noted in a few other places, you would be better off pointing Roon at an exported folder. The hit rate will be better and you have an easier task to find it and map to it.

Nick's and Russ advice to Export from your Sooloos library to another drive is definitely the best advice for medium and longer term

However, in order to just TRY Roon and see what it's capable of doing and displaying etc., then point Roon at the following folder

"smb://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/Music/Music2"......without the quotation marks obviously

Go into Control:PC / Mac or Web and take a note of the IP address that is displayed there for your Sooloos core

Enter that IP address in place of the 4 "xxx" entries in the above address......and Roon will then be pointed at the Sooloos folders containing your Sooloos albums

Just remember that the Sooloos database folder structure will prevent Roon from properly identifying all your albums.......but it will still identify probably around 75% of them.........and will be enough for you to experiment with Roon for a while

But for the longer term, Exporting to another drive is definitely the way to go

Gents,

I downloaded a trial run of Roon on Mac (OSX Mavericks) and am trying to have it "watch" my MC200. I understand the preferred practice is to do a native export, but my goal at present is simply to see if Roon is for me before committing to a subscription.

I've read the various posts about connecting it via "smb://xxx.xxx.x.x/Music/Music2" etc., but have had no success whatsoever. It should be obvious that I'm no computer wizard.

Any step by step screen shots available to guide me? Would love to join the party but feeling left out at present.

Have you turned the MC200 core off and is it set to be an audio end point?

Have you gone to Roon setting to enable the MC200?

The SMB command can be confusing. Try it this way.

Get Finder on your screen

Select Go from the Menu Bar
Towards the bottom select Connect to Server
In the box that pops up enter
Code:
SMB://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
You should have a screen asking for a password, you should probably just hit the "Connect" button.

You will now have your MC200 showing with the file folders.

Now go to Roon and it should find your Directories. (I dropped Roon so I can't still walk you thru those steps.)

I have not turned off the MC200 core nor set it as an audio endpoint.

My understanding is that I could use Roon on my iMac without disabling the MC200 core.

My goal is simply to try the Roon interface with my MC200 library and see if it offers a "better" experience than the sooloss UI.

I was not able to turn my MC200 Core off since I have no PC (only Mac) to run Core Control. As you note the only output was from my laptop. I did not care for the UI in my limited trial and asked them to cancel my subscription.

I can see where many here will use all of Roons features but that isn't they way I want to find and queue by music.

I did the whole smb link with my MC600 and with Tidal. The Tidal integration is leaps and bounds better than Sooloos.

I can see how someone who is very aware of their collection, might find the Roon interface too much. I don't think I have ever read liner notes or and extras for my CD's. For entertainment purposes it's excellent and for significant others who rattle on all the time that it's all just too complex to use. I like it, especially for a first pass.

I suspect it will be huge for home integrators and home automation installers. It's that must better than iTunes integration, given its not platform specific.

I've tried the following with no success:

"smb://xxx.xxx.x.x"

"SMB://xxx.xxx.x.x"

"smb://xxx.xxx.x.x/Music/Music2"

Any suggestions? I'm 4 days into my Roon trial and anxious to see the "magic". My iTunes library (10 CD's) is being watched by Roon so it seems the download/install is ok.

I'm feeling quite daft at the moment. I've tried the smb & cifs route to no avail.

I'm positive it's user error on my end. Here's my workflow:

I go into Mac finder and "connect to server", then I enter the smb/cifs route which seems to connect to the MC200.

Then I open "Roon" but it still doesn't seem to access the MC200 library.

(I recall that when I first installed Roon it automatically detected my iTunes library)

Is there some additional step in Roon that I must perform in order to access the MC200?

So you are not adding the network drive from within Roon setup?

You need to add the MC200 network share from within Roon.

Matsaly

If you have successfully connected the Mac to the MC200 then you need to add it in Roon, from the main window select the three horizontal lines click on it and then select settings, then select storage, then in the section marked as WATCHED FOLDERS select add folder then you can browse for the MC200 music2 folder.

If you have not connected the Mac to the MC200 then do exactly as above except when you go to WATCHED FOLDERS select the lower section NETWORK FOLDER and put the smb:// command in the network path box, then select add folder at the bottom.

Roon should then add your music from the MC200.

Cheers

I don't think you need to add SMB etc - at least you didn't have to when I tried it - adding it actually caused it to give an error. But that was on a pre-release version of Roon so may have changed for release version.

Kudos to Russ who reached out to me and was kind enough to walk me through the setup during our phone call.

Thanks to his effort (and everyone else's input) Roon is able to access the content of my MC200.

As posited- it was my user error that caused the problem. I was unaware that one had to "add" the MC200 to the watched folder in the Roon app.

Since Roon automatically detected my iTunes library when I first installed it, I wrongly inferred that roon would automatically find the path to my MC200 once I mounted it.

Russ is a true gent and an asset to the HH community. Many thanks to the admins and other helpful HH's as well.

Can you tell us how Roon is coping with the metadata from your Sooloos MC200 library.
I have an Native exported library which works well and am curious as to wether this export step is now necessary.

Yep, I agree, Russ is a gent.

Russ is a gentleman and a scholar.

I'm two-thirds of the way though a native export of my Sooloos library. It's taken just under two weeks so far. I've found that a lot of files have been corrupted, so it's a real pain to have to re-rip those discs and then have to delete the duplicate files that are created in the Roon library as those discs are reexported.

Some of my discs are in the IoW, so I also need to make a note of what to bring back next time I'm down there. Sadly Sooloos does not allow the export of the list of corrupted files in CSV.

Some of my files are lost forever (for example some of my Society of Sound downloads where I've lapsed my subscription) because the files are corrupted on the back up as well as in the library.

Generally it shows that you're better off having a separate Roon library, I think.

Sorry Dominic
But just trying to fully understand what I think you're said

Do you mean that

a) the Track Files were non-corrupt and would play just fine within Sooloos

b) but the Sooloos Export procedure resulted in Corrupt files??

If so, How did you determine that the Sooloos exported files were Corrupt??.....was it based on what Roon was reporting??

The files will not play in Sooloos. They were fine when they were imported, so it must be down to disk corruption.

When I migrated to the QNAP I did a backup and restore rather than a native export in order to preserve the metadata. All of these files backed up and restored perfectly recently.

The native export for Roon is a different matter, perhaps because the export actually tries to tag the files it is a more robust test of corruption? I know they're corrupt since the native export tells me they are and can't export. I end up with a lot of albums with missing tracks.

I've tried copying many of the files from the library and doing a FLAC to FLAC conversion using XLD and they all give a "Fail to decode" error.

Did you have either backup falling over or restore falling over (hanging/crashing) when you did that recently ?

It could be that the files were broken in the process.

The back up continually crashed due to Control:Mac not being fit for purpose.

However it certainly would not account for the number of tracks that have been corrupted (well over 200, maybe 300 so far). Sometimes one an album, sometimes practically the whole album.

No consolation, but, that was why I wrote the backup suggestion that avoided the Control:Mac/Control:PC routine altogether (search my posts for freefilesync). There is NO AUDIT or info about any of the Sooloos backup jobs which means you just have to cross your fingers that you get what you expected.

External tools to copy the whole directories is a far better option. You are then only at the mercy of the import. I would doubt that so many files corrupt during normal storage in a Sooloos core. Writing files out and back, however, in a special backup format has to carry extra risks.

As I say...doesn't really help you now, but, for others that read this it might.

Am sure we can find ways to repopulate your corrupt tracks.

Rgds,
Nick

I have been using FreeFileSync as well. Sadly that disk is offsite in the IoW.

I'm slowly reripping those discs that are identified as corrupt. Not helped by my copy of Tremendous Dynamite Live being covered with glue from the edge of the cardboard sleeve...
