The Meridian audio endpoints offer Meridian Integration, i.e. control of volume and source selection of Meridian devices, such as via SpeakerLink to DSP speakers via Sooloos Control devices.

Will Roon still be able to utilise this integrated solution, or use some other means (i.e. RS232) or simply act as a fixed source?

The sad fact is that Sooloos only offers semi-integration with Meridian otherwise I wouldn't need an MSR/vMSR. I wouldn't have thought that it would be too difficult for a flexible front end to accommodate integration with endpoints or systems that expose control via IP/Telnet/Serial, including a GlobalTach solution, or API if the developers are willing.

To me integration is an interesting demonstration of how deep Roons commitment actually is to various manufacturers endpoints. It would be quite damning in my eyes if after all these years we actually get better integration with Meridian equipment using a third party solution than we do with Meridian Sooloos.

I look forward to seeing what Roon can do for my Meridian system.

Cheers,

Tony.

I believe that Roon allows full volume support, and goes one further than Sooloos in allowing you to put a Sooloos zone into standby.

Sooloos, Roon, G series (with LPS upgrade), 800 series (with LPS upgrade), HD621, AC200, Prime and PS, DSPs old and new.

Purdeys, Moke, Leica, 'Blad. Only the best.

Thanks for the clarification. It's pretty much what I expected and hoped for. Sad that after all these years it takes a non Meridian product to get such functionality in a Meridian system.

Cheers,

Tony.

Just to be clear, with respect to Meridian integration the only thing that Roon offers over and above Sooloos is the ability to put a zone back into standby. Which is of course a very welcome feature (and one we have been requesting from M for years) but it's hardly a deal breaker.

Carl

Just to be clear integration is one of the key advantages for many people of a closed or single vendor system.

It may or may not be a deal breaker but I think that's a decision for the individual consumer to make not anyone else. For me it's certainly a hassle that I would hope didn't exist at this not insubstantial price point.

Regardless of the above I consider it to be a poor showing if a third party product integrates better than one of your own. Obviously in this case it must be noted that Roon isn't exactly your ordinary third party but still...

Cheers,

Tony.

How is volume control achieved - what interface on e.g. an 861 is used?

Main system - Sources (Kodi-HTPC, Vero 4k, FireTV, Sat) into Trinnov Altitude 32 (8-16) (+Roon), Trinnov Amplitude 8 amp & Vivid Audio (Giya G3, V1.5) and REL Stentor III speakers. Others: F80 + Raspberry Pi and other Pi systems.

I assume that it will be much the same way as it is now via SpeakerLink/Comms or that it requires a GlobalCache similar to vMSR.

It would be interesting though if Roon can achieve standby without a GlobalCache since for some reason I was under the impression (perhaps incorrectly) that this inability was a hardware limitation of SpeakerLink/Comms.

Cheers,

Tony.

Thanks, but in my case it would be a question of SpeakerLink/Comms to what? If I go with Roon, the only Meridian component will be an 861(ID41).

Hopefully you won't have an issue then and it will just be done over IP or however it is done now.

I must say however that in a Roon world unless you particularly like the form factor of an MS200 that your 861/ID41 combination or an 808/ID41 are really the only Meridian endpoints that make sense to me.

If I could afford it and Atmos was definitely on the cards I would personally follow your choice. It must sound fantastic.

Cheers,

Tony.

Price might also be a consideration with the MS200, not sure which other cheaper Roon endpoints will give you apodizing with upsampling.

I've not seen anything to suggest that any additional hardware is required for Roon to use the volume and zone standby facilities over and above what you already have.
