Hi guys,

I want to be able to stream Tidal to my iPhone 6, bypass the Apple DAC, and use an Explorer 2 to headphones. I've done a bit of searching on the web but I do not have a clear idea of what docking device or other connection will allow me to do this. I've read something to the effect that Apple's lightening to USB camera adapter will do the trick but what I read did not state explicitly that the Apple DAC would be bypassed. I am also not clear about power requirements for the Explorer2 running off USB.

Thanks for any ideas.

I would like to do the same however I see two problems:

You would be powering the Explorer from the phone and the phone would need to be told by the Explorer what is required of it (to output a digital signal). As the Explorer is not designed for this it ain't gonna work.

The answer is a device in the middle that would power the Explorer and get the digital signal from the phone and pass on.

As far as I know there isn't currently anything like that and it would start to be more trouble than it's worth.

Sony do some great portable digital DAC's/headphone amps they are expensive but will do what you want out of the box.

I think when the Explorer came out, it was found to be possible to use it with iPhone/iPad using a Camera Kit connector, and a powered USB hub. Googling the forum will find you details on that. I bought the Camera Kit connector to try it out but never actually got around to it. Anyway it's hardly an elegant solution.

If you want good sound while walking around, best off getting an Astell&Kern/Sony ZX-1/Pono.

I don't want to use the set up for walking around. It is for my office at work. I can't install Tidal on my work PC without going through the IT department and I don't want to fight that fight. So that is why I thought Tidal on iPhone might just work.

Thanks.

So the wife has got me B&W P7's for Christmas and I'm now thinking of an Explorer 2 but as it will be used with an iPad and iPhone only I would like to know if going down this route is practical?

I'm thinking of a battery powered USB hub to power the Explorer. Has anyone tried using either the Teac or Onkyo Hi Res apps to do away with the cck?

If this don't pan out a Sony PHA 2 is my other choice but then no MQA frown

Any thoughts recommendations.

You already opened your Xmas present!? grin

Anyway, I'm still interested in this set up but do not know if it will work. I sort of want to get the Explorer2 but prefer to know if it will work before buying it.

I am sceptical that this will work, but have not tried it. Unfortunately I do not have the lightning to USB adapter, otherwise it would be easy to try.

You could check the iFi solution as an alternative to the Explorer 2.

Hi, Has anyone tried this yet?

As for in my car I am looking for an external DAC solution. I have a USB and 3.5mm jack connection to choose from.

It looks to me that if I connect a USB Y-cable (split data and power, the USB from the car feeding the DAC) the Explorer2 may work... or it may not... that is the question?

Or, alternative, the AnK K10 or Onkyo AC HA200 are an option altough I wonder how Onkyo will cope with MQA (thinking that Onkyo goes MQA).

Any thoughts?

Cheers!

JaapJan,

Does the car USB operate an audio output? In my car I'm fairly sure it's just a power socket, but haven't checked.

What car is it (you're going to say Bugatti Veyron, aren't you... sick)?

In the end I got an E2 to use with my PC. You have to install a Meridian USB driver on the PC. I was told by my dealer that there is no such driver for an iPhone or iPad so it won't work. As for using it in your car, I'm not sure but would there be a way to install the Meridian USB driver into your car system?

The USB on the car is in input.
It allows your car to read the files on the device you plug into it.

BMW?
Just you say Y-Cable.

Meridian once suggested that Explorer should work with an iPhone is connected through the camera connection kit (CCK?). I think someone tried and it worked although iirc needed a powered hub for power.

However, I don't think the camera connection kit is a viable product anymore due to the demise of the old style connector plus there seem to be different versions of the CCK (when I plugged mine into my iPad 3 it said that mine was not a supported product which, although an official connector, was purchased in classic iPod days). I don't know whether the more up to date alternatives would work.

This is a link to the lightening based Apple CCK. Compatibility with cameras seem to be a bit hit and miss let alone with non camera devices. But if there was a non quibble returns policy when buying, I guess its worth a shot although the need to use a powered hub would seem to make its use as a portable device somewhat limited which, as the item linked only seems to support iPad, portability may be less of an issue.

I mentioned USB Y cable as our cars have both USB and 3.5mm jack input. The USB could power the Explorer was my thinking whilst the jack would receive the music input. I prefer using my Note 2 for streaming over my iPhone so i can keep speach and music seggregated.
I think for now i'll stick to low quality via Napster and give it a try as soon as Tidal / MQA is available on Sooloos, as only then i'll subscribe.

Cheers!

This couldn't work.

The jack on the Explorer is an output, not an input. The only input on an Explorer is USB.

Yes it could, I think:
iPhone or Note2 USB out to Explorer and car USB via USB Y cable.

Explorer jack out to car jack in.

Cheers!

Quite a bit of time has past so was wondering if anyone may have found a working mobile solution to this. Mainly e2 into iPhone 6.

I use my i6 through my E2 and Prime powered using the USB 3 camera connection kit and externally powered via the lightning socket only on the USB3 kit.

For portable use, whilst i have not tried it, cont see why it would not work with an external battery pack - we have a couple of 5000mWh TPlink battery packs which work very well for other uses.

The length of the lightning cable on camera kit is a bit short to prevent a birdsnest of cables, but you can get lightning extension cables that, whilst i have not tried with camera kit, works well with another lightning accessory i have, even when 2m long.

Just for clarity, it's the USB 3 version of the camera kit with a lightning socket for power.

Needs the recent camera kit firmware but you get prompted to download that the moment it's plugged in.

Hi,

Works for me, using iPadPro > Apple USB3 adapter > Explorer2 > headphones + power to adapter from the iPad charger.

Without the charger connected, the 1st light on the E2 flickers occasionally but there is no sound. I'm playing music directly off the iPad, or streamed from Tidal. I'll look into getting a battery pack to try that option.

Also works with a Jitterbug added.

Just an update to say that I've run this with a Belkin 'mixit Power Pack 4000' battery pack and it all works fine.

I have listened to Red Book and HiRes music files through the lightning connector from my iPhones 5S and 7 to the Explorer2. You do need an adapter and something like a hub (or my REGEN) to provide enough power, so it's not a very compact, portable combo.

No MQA from TIDAL, however, because the iOS version doesn't support Master functionality AFAIK.

If you fav an MQA in Tidal desktop, would it not play via the iOS and Explorer?

Tidal Masters are currently only available through the Tidal desktop app and Roon - Not sure if the Roon app for iPhone will do the job.

Cheers
Tom

Haven’t tried it myself, yet, but iPhone can now be used as a Roon endpoint using Roon with the iPeng app.
So MQA May be possible!

Tidal Masters don't come through the iOS app yet. And I've not found a way to get MQA from my iPhone7 through Roon and iPeng to the Explorer2 for decoding. But you can enjoy great sounding hires over the network, or from locally stored files, to the DAC through a version of the camera connection kit with both USB and another lightning port for power. (Otherwise the iPhone will complain about an unsupported device, and switch back to the internal speaker.)

Even though Apple's own music app won't play hires files loaded onto an iPhone (5s or newer), third party apps such as the ONKYO HF Player give you that option.
