Strange behavior with the latest Apple TV. I removed a functioning Gen 2 unit to replace with the latest 1080p unit. HDMI out to HD621, then multichannel digital out of the HD621 to my G68. No monitor hooked up presently as I am replacing it. Playing some music from iTunes as a test and my system flashes in and out of sync - no audio.

Anyone else having challenging experiences, similar problem and found a solution?

Am I right in thinking you have nothing terminating your HDMI chain at all? My guess would be the new AppleTV doesn't like having an incomplete EDID table from the HD621 (which only substitutes in it's own Audio capabilities to the table it gets from the display/scaler you then connect it to IIRC).
Try hooking up any HDMI monitor you have access to, cycling the power on the HD621 to get it to read the EDID from the monitor and see if that helps.

I thought that one of the features of the HD621 is that it can run as a sink in its own right which basically means that it can run without any devices present to allow audio to be played without any display device.

Yes, it can. But in this case it appears that the handshaking between the HD621 and the source is breaking down

Main system - Sources (Kodi-HTPC, Vero 4k, FireTV, Sat) into Trinnov Altitude 32 (8-16) (+Roon), Trinnov Amplitude 8 amp & Vivid Audio (Giya G3, V1.5) and REL Stentor III speakers. Others: F80 + Raspberry Pi and other Pi systems.

Isn't that after it's been connected to a display, acquired the relevant EDID settings which it then buffers?

I bought 2 new Apple TV3's (1080p capable). I installed one in my primary music listening room with a 861v6 and HD621 (plus a HDTV). It negotiated the HDMI handshake fine and played back 5.1 DD video and 2 channel audio just fine.

Problem solved. Somehow I damaged the HDMI cable, although not visible to the unaided eye. New cable and all is well.

Mike, does the new Apple TV handle mutli-channel hi-resolution audio (5.1 24bit / 96 khz) through HDMI?

thanks

Or may simply be a cable fault wink Glad it's all sorted.

So HD621 works when no display connected unless someone tells me otherwise?

Jerome,

I am running the stock firmware and the Apple TV will only stream from iTunes using Home Sharing on the LAN (iTunes I guess) or rent TV/Films from the iTunes store. There are a few apps, too. AFAIK, the streamed audio is limited to standard 5.1 DD.

I just tested a HD film streamed from Netflix listed as 5.1, it came out as AC3 3/2.1 48k (DD) on my processor. Another film on the AVSforum NF 5.1 HD list as 5.1 only played as 2 channel (IP Man). I'm not sure about that one.

Hi,

Can you confirm that the latest Apple TV still won't output audio at CD bitrates (i.e. Apple Lossless at 44k)?

Thanks,

Brian

I reripped a black keys CD I recently purchased in iTunes Apple Lossless (ALAC) and noticed the ATV3 was connected via HDMI through HD621, which upsamples/apodizes the audio.

I found an optical cable, ran the M. config program, installed the optical audio cable, and changed to the optical output. the 861 screen now displays "PCM 2-Ch 48K", the 8K's say "MHR 96k" .

When playing through HDMI 2 channel music, 861 says "MHR Movie2 96K" , DSP speakers display "MHR 96k".

The ATV3 has a new (perhaps only to me?) option, 16bit output or Auto . Setting the option to 16 bit instead of auto, the 861 still displayed "PCM 2-Ch 48K" , DSP "MHR 96k" .

There is simultaneous audio output through HDMI and the optical cable while playing music and movies, in case anyone is curious or uses chair shaker technology that requires DD input.
