Has anybody had problems with the 508 CD player regarding skipping. Unless the disc is completely spotless the player will skip or not read the disc at all. I read about the error correction on CD players and wonder if Meridian opt to reduce this to a minimum to aid fidelity.

Tim,

I think that the 508's tracking can be configured to be more or less resilient, with some trade off in sound quality. If memory serves, this is done via a menu called "Error". It's not documented in the user manual.

just wondering how the use of a ROM drive on the newer players afford better error correction, I though the error correction was just built into the discs themselves as extra information.

Many thanks for the link to that post.
I accessed the menu but had different options. Basically there were two of interest:
S.A. with settings 1-8 (mine was at 1)
P.A. with settings 1-8 (again set to 1).

I tried a disc that was particularly difficult to read and found that with P.A set to 8 the 508 made it's best attempt.

Also I changed the Config/Error to 'on' and the error was 'error 11', could anybody throw any light on this.

Many thanks in advance.
Tim

S.A. means System Address
P.A. means Product Address

Unless you have more than one system, or more than one Meridian CD player in your system, both of those should be left at 1. Changing then won't affect how your CD player reads disc.

I don't know what error code 11 is. You can call Jason at Meridian in Atlanta. He is the head repair guy.

Before you do, what were the other setup options?

I'll have to check this evening but they didn't seem to relate to the tracking:

If I remember correctly:

S.S. set to CD.

Error. set to off (originally).

Another which seemed to be communications. set to auto.
