Edit: Sorry, I thought this was for the region mod.

When I bought mine from Oppo with the Early Adoption Program RS232 was an $89 option.

in that case I am way off Tommy, I thought Oppo said 125$, then I thought they said 99$, now I hear 55$

I will get a confirmation and let everyone know, it was not my intent to make a buck on that, I was quoting what I thought was the price

thanks

Thanks in advance

PT, I have no stated warranty, but I will take care of folks should anything happen, Oppo units have a very good track record in my opinion, up until 2 weeks ago I had never had a Oppo come back to me after shipping it modified(over 250 units), sadly one of the early 83 PB guys had a problem unit, but like I said I am taking care of it and always will

I am always adding more checkout time before and after mod to guys orders going overseas grin

the modified Oppo plays back all DVD regions, all 3 Blu-Ray regions and does native NTSC and PAL output at 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p/24 and 576i, 720p/50, 1080i/50

it is the ultimate all format machine

thanks

I believe it's 89 or 99 installed, 55 as a DIY kit.

Hello Gary:

Thank you for the prompt response. I'd actually already assumed that your modifications would void the standard Oppo 12-month warranty but felt it best to clarify the matter. I don't personally have a problem in relying upon your personal guarantee but others who are more risk averse might develop an anxiety about the possibility that you might - God forbid - fall under the proverbial bus.

As for the PAL playback, my reason for raising the matter is that I already have a Blu-ray player modded for region-free operation, but it will not play a PAL DVD, of whatever region coding (even 0). I'm actually a little puzzled how Oppo itself can advertise PAL playback for its standard BDP-83 sold in the US since, without a region-free capability (which the standard Oppo does not have), such a feature is essentially worthless, the great majority of PAL DVDs being encoded R2 or R4.

Nevertheless, I'm proposing to go ahead and place an order on the confident assumption that should the machine not function as described a full refund will be provided.

Thanks

PT

Sorry VK, I'm not quite sure what your comment means. Region 0 discs can be PAL or NTSC (I have a couple that are PAL one side and NTSC the other). R2 discs can also be PAL or NTSC depending whether they are marketed in Europe or Japan, respectively. I'm not 100% sure but R4 may include PAL and NTSC territories as well.

That's why it's important that a 'region-free' player handle not just the DVD region coding but also (native) PAL playback as well. My modded Pioneer DV-79 does both but my modded Panasonic BD-35 does only the former, hence the question.

The comment means that the stock Oppo's PAL option isn't worthless, it can play Region 0 PAL disks.

PT, I do not provide refunds on gear that has been modified, sold and/or shipped, I do however take care of folks should anything happen 6 months to a year out

the Oppo is a true multisystem capable unit, with direct output for all NTSC and PAL formats

thanks

In that case Gary, I'm afraid I will have to hold off ordering until the claim for native playback of PAL R2/R4 discs has been corroborated by someone who has actually played such discs on your player with the region-free mod. By native playback I mean direct display on a PAL TV, and not via PAL to NTSC conversion.

Is this something you could have your region-free mod vendor confirm?

Peter, I can confirm that myself sir, the Oppo does native output for these resolutions:

480i
480p
576i
576p
720p/60
720p/50
1080i/60
1080i/50
1080p/24

this is via HDMI or HD-SDI mod for any region DVD or Blu-Ray disc, component doesn't support 1080p/24 as far as I know, also 1080i/50 can be output as 1080p/50 etc. etc., the Oppo features source direct which when enabled is just that, source direct untouched output for all NTSC and PAL resolutions

the Oppo can also be set for NTSC output only and will convert all PAL, likewise can be set for PAL output only and convert all NTSC, finally the multisystem/native output we are talking about is direct unconverted

thanks Peter, any other questions just let me know at anytime and I will be happy to answer them
