Gary, could you summarise how SACD will work with the player in a Meridian system? Are there SACD benefits with the player as it's one of the things I was holding off until I understood. Be carefull with SACD Looking at the homepage: http://www.custom-ht.com/oppo.htmlReading the preliminary specs .... -source direct 1080p/24 4:2:2 Blu-Ray output via HDMI (as close to HD-SDI quality possible) -source direct output of Blu-Ray audio codecs like Dolby TrueHD/DTS Master/LPCM via HDMI 1.3 -source direct 480i/576i 4:2:2 SD DVD output via HDMI (as close to SDI quality possible) -source direct SACD as DSD via HDMI output-source direct DVD-Audio as High frequency LPCM -high-end digital CD audio transport ... That means DSD not PCM output, just noise or nothing you will hear You have the option in the menu setup of the Oppo to convert the DSD to PCM before its sent along its merry way to either the HDMI or the Analog outputs... I think Gary is grabbing the PCM streams from the analog section (just before it hits the DACs)... I am having NO problems with SACD playback from the Oppo over the modded SPDIF ports... the SQ is awesome.

That means DSD not PCM output, just noise or nothing you will hear Please see page 54 on the preliminary BDP-83 manual, in particular the line: "The converted PCM data is then output through HDMI or the internal DAC (Digital to Analog Converter) for the analog audio output ports." The whole game has always been setting the relevant Oppo player (starting with the modded 980 and 983) to output SACD as LPCM over HDMI, then tapping the bits prior to the DACs for output over SPDIF jacks. The only player that couldn't do this, if I remember correctly, was the 981 due to the PCM data path not being tappable prior to the DAC.

You have the option in the menu setup of the Oppo to convert the DSD to PCM before its sent along its merry way to either the HDMI or the Analog outputs... But is that setting bypassed if you select "Source Direct"? For an SACD, the DSD stream is the original, unprocessed, data.

no worries here guys, SACD is decoded perfectly in the Oppo, all you do is set the unit for PCM instead of bitstream audio, source direct has no bearing on this, just the video
so those of you that want PCM for SACD, you are set, those of you that want DSD bitstream you are set as well
this applys to the SPDIF mod as well
thanks

Gary, is the price for the RS232 Oppo + region-free mod (only) anywhere?

Actually that doesn't matter at all on the 980 or 983, their DACs were PCM only. As such they were always fed PCM no matter if you were passing DSD over HDMI or not.
the power plant is not balanced power as far as I know, balanced power uses a transformer and the output is labeled as balanced 60v/60v
the unit can be connected to any power setup from Panamax, Monster, PS Audio as long as it delivers straight normal 0/120v That means it's no transformer upgrade for Europeans, we need 120/240 50/60 like the original. But I think the Meridian SPDIF mod is enough for me anyway. BTW, have we seen any Powerbuy prices? What retail price for the player have you used when calculating your prices at http://www.custom-ht.com/oppo.html? no that does not mean no transformer mod for 220v, the units can be wired for 220v just the same as 120v input, the power supply mods I do are 100% capable of both, just when set for the given power sources like say 120v you can't connect 220v or vice versa, unlike the stock Oppo which takes all in at once powerbuy pricing will be around 8 to 10% off the website prices as it stands now, there is talk about the Oppo being 599$ instead of 499$ which would effect these prices thanks
OK, so if I (or Oppo) supply my own player the Meridian mod will be around $400. What will the region-free mod be, if it will be available? What is your address?

I curently have the C61R, the rack mounted version of the G61R and use HDMI from the PS3 into the HD621. This in turn is connected to the processor via 3 digital smartlink inputs. Under these conditions, can the remaining 3? digital inputs be configured to take SPDIF a/la Gary's 'Digital Meridian Transport'? Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Paul

Shawn Argh, yes of course Shawn is correct. I had forgotten why everyone was waiting to see how the BFP-83 would behave with DSD: whether it would allow conversion to PCM prior to hitting the DAC, or not (as was the case with the 981, if I'm not mistaken).
