Something puzzling.
Last night I played a DVD I had burned on a Pioneer DVDR on the Panasonic BD35 -> Meridian HD621 -> Meridian 861 -> amps etc
The audio was excellent and the video picture quality sharp.
I then played it through the Pioneer recorder (not the one it was burned with) -> Meridian HD621 -> Meridian 861 -> amps etc
First up the video was noticably better from the Panasonic and that was expected. However what was not expected was the far better audio via the Panasonic(remember the DVD was only 2CH recorded originally by L/R analog input).
I had assumed that any digital audio on a DVD is read and then transmitted out HDMI without any alteration whatsoever. It is then processed by the 861 so should be the same from any DVD player. Maybe not so?
Or, a thought which just struck me, has the routing of the HDMI through an HDMI splitter before the HD621 has an affect on improving the audio? Yet the suggestion has been that it would deteriorate it.
Perplexing.
John Burn two and calibrate the levels they are playing at then compare then compare them.

Burn two and calibrate the levels they are playing at then compare then compare them. Not really necessary George. The difference was chalk & cheese. I should have explained before. Via the Panasonic BD the sound was full with great bottom end but was thin with minimal bass via the Pioneer. What has me stumped is that I always thought the digital passed straight through from the player but obviously something else is going on. Maybe differences in HDCP handshaking? That is the only difference I can think of. In other words the Panasonic and HD621 have a friendly handshake but between the Pioneer and HD621 is is less warm!!! Which raises the spectre that the HD621 might not be so great with some components because of HDCP handshaking differences?? I'm guessing (perhaps wildly) here. But, as posted earlier, the handshaking between the TV HDD recorded and the HD621 is very good. More investigation needed. John EDIT ADDITION: Just tried out the audio with a commercial DVD and the audio was pretty much the same from both players although possibly slightly better ex the Panasonic. I do not trust auditory memory so the only way to be sure would be to follow George's idea of the same two discs playing and to switch between them. As for the HDMI splitter, again it sounded the same if the splitter was in circuit or not. I've no idea what was going on last night with that burned DVD. Maybe I'll experiment more later but there are guests here now so it will have to wait.

See what happens with a dts CD on both players and upsampling on HD621 off.

Hi Rob, I had this green screen issue as well I managed to solve it by changing the colour space to YCbCr (4:2:2) on my projector. I am not sure why it worked but it did Tahir

Gosh, given the reach of this forum (= minority of Meridian users), I wonder if M dealers and M support have their hands full at the moment. The HD621, for all of its magic, doesn't seem to be plug'n'play for everyone.

The 621, for all of its magic, doesn't seem to be plug'n'play for everyone. Frankly, the contact I've had with my local dealer and also with the tech people at Meridian Atlanta has left a lot to be desired. They don't seem to be up to speed on the HD621 yet. I've received a lot of answers like "I think so." Not too reassuring.

I spent most of the morning trying to get the HD621 to pass DD5.1 and DTS5.1 without success.
I set up my Dish DVR to output only bitstream and my 568.2mm read PCM Music6 with no sound.
I set up my PS3 to output DD/DTS and put in DD and DTS discs and my 568 read PCM Mov2 and produced sound except NO CENTER CHANNEL.
With my PS3 with BDs the 568 correctly reads PCM Mov6 and produces correct sound.
All source connections direct to the HD621, the HD621 set to pass DD and DTS and Type0 selected.
Has anyone been able to get the HD621 to pass DD5.1/DTS5.1???

Hi, I am configuring my sistem by Meridian Configuration Program, but when I connect HD621 to G68 (from M [Multichannel Digital Coax] to MD2 [Multichannel Digital Coax])I get the message following: Cannot Apply Connection This connection cannot be applied to the settings of the G68J. The HD621 source does not have an MSR legend. I click on button OK and the program makes the connection. What's the issue? Thank in advance for your help. Umberto

One of the biggest issues is that they need to rework how it's setup in MConfig. A few well placed changes would do wonders...
Consider hooking up a different audio processor into the chain, the G91.
In that case, in MConfig you would connect your sources for which you want external decoding into the G91 and then you connect the G91 to the upstream audio processor.
If you connected all your HDMI sources into the HD621 in MConfig that would be much more intuitive and probably get rid of a number of their tech support calls.

Speaking of MCongfig, since the 568.2mm is not included in the MConfig sources it is a bit of quandary that it works it all. You end up being to able to change, save, and upload the properties of the HD621 but you connect anything to the HD621 or connect it to the 568.2mm within MConfig. FWIW.

Is it specific to particular content. The only time I noticed this was on a DVD-Audio disc (Boz Scaggs, Dig). I'm really just getting started with the HD621 and I spent most of the day redoing my entire system. This was just phase 1, i.e. getting it into one cabinet. After that comes the cleanup if I can manage it ;-) Cheers,
