Excuse my ignorance, but how does the MeridianG68 handle the 4 coax digital inputs coming from the modified Oppo BDP-83
I should imagine that you would determine the output as 5.1 in the player thus only needing 3 digital connections. The rear back channels being downmixed into the rears.

Please add me to the list for the power buy. I want the Oppo with HD-SDI out, regionfree, zonefree, and the analog upgrades.

Yes, the reason the mod is 4*S/P-DIF out instead of 3 is that the extra cost is pretty neglible - and Meridian *may* make it able for the G68 to handle 7.1 in instead of just the current 5.1. No-one knows for sure if it ever will be done and if it will only be a FW change or a costly(?) HW modification, but this mod is a cheap insurance to be able to utilize those two extra channels in the future.

Are you sure that the G68 converts the signal from its analog inputs to digital and back for its analog outputs even when the "Direct" mode is used? I've been told that all analogue inputs are always sampled, but I have never checked it myself so I really can't say if that info (which I believe came from Meridian) took your situation into account.

A question for Gary: When Oppo will provide firmware updates via their website, will those also "work" for the modified Oppo player? If your 'tuning' includes software modifications, would you then provide updates for the modified software on your website?

Are you sure that the G68 converts the signal from its analog inputs to digital and back for its analog outputs even when the "Direct" mode is used? I have connected my SACD player by analog connections to the G68 and use "Direct" on the AUX channel. I thought that this path is analog from source to speaker. I could never get a straight answer from Meridian about this (similar to my question whether the "balanced" outputs have balanced output stages or not). There is no direct analog pass through on a G68 or 861 or 568.

Gary,
Excuse my ignorance, but how does the MeridianG68 handle the 4 coax digital inputs coming from the modified Oppo BDP-83? It sounds from all I see in this forum that one can connect the Oppo directly to the G68 (without a HD621 in between)in order to reproduce lossless 7.1 ch True HD or DTS-HD formats. Does each SPDIF connection carry the signal of two channels? What settings of the G68 tell it that all four inputs belong to a single source?
With a better understanding of this I can make the decision whether I should opt for the 4 x SPDIF option or not.
Thank you for your patience. Roger you have it exactly right, you simply connect the SPDIF outputs to your Meridian and yes each channel carries 2 audio signals I am positive you would be more than thrilled with the mod and the for a lack of a better word ubber sound quality you get, simply the best the customer who got his Oppo modified emailed me today saying how awesome it was, I'd say he will be posting some comments very soon thanks

Roger no software updates will effect any mods, all are hardware and are good to go with any updates thanks

Thank you for your patience. The Wiki explains how to setup the Meridian. Meridian is currently limited to 6 channels (3 S/PDIFs). http://www.meridianunplugged.com/wiki/index.php?pagename=HDMISolutions

Gary,
What would think of modified Oppo sending: 1) audio (plus video too I suppose) over HDMI to a Meridian HD621, and 2) HD-SDI video to a Lumagen XD via external Blackmagic HD-SDI to HDMI converter (since Lumagen does not have direct SDI input)? I have all the pieces except for the Oppo.
George PS What would such a unit cost?

Hi Gary,
Is it possible to specify the following combinations:
1. Region-free + 4xSPDIF 2. Region-free + 4xSPDIF + clock upgrade
That is, without the PS upgrade or analog disables.
Best, KJ
