I am looking for a disk spinner that supports CD, SACD and DVD-Audio and puts the sound in PCM on the HDMI. I was looking at the Pioneer DV-610, but it seems that it puts SACD as DSD on HDMI. I know that Oppo is mentioned a few times on this forum before, but what players can you recommend? Should be Oppo and Denon, then.
HD621, G98DH, G68ADV, Bc Acoustiqe ACT A3, 5200C DSP33, NuForce Reference 9 monoblocks, 2x SB3's, Velodyne DD-15 & DD-12 Subwoofers and a Meridian sub.

The Oppo is my current favorite BD player. I have had a beta since October. I just finished writing upa review of the Pioneer BDP-09FD. I have been using the PS3 since launch. The Pansonic 35, 55, 60 and 80s all have the best chroma resolution on the market.

Are you suggesting that other players are not delivering the source data on the disc correctly or are your preferred players doing additional processing? Thanks, Mark

Or, to follow up on Mark's question, is it because they load faster, have better ergonomics, etc... 2. Perhaps i should have been clearer in my initial posting...given that I will be using a RadianceXE video processor, what would be the ideal blu-ray player to match with it (i.e. the Blu-ray players video processing capabilities are not important to me as the Lumagen will do all the heavy lifting) Thanks in advance... In a way doesn't this thread need to be split as one's Bluray player preference might well be different for those who have a video processor and those who don't. Obviously those without a video processor will be more concerned with its upscaling ability for DVD's etc while others (myself included) will rely on our VP. The other factor is whether people are looking for analogue outputs!

NB Be interesting to see how the forthcoming Arcams will justify their price point.

In terms of chroma detail / resolution, only the new Panasonic's are capable of fully reproducing what is on the disc(s) today. 2. Load times and seeking is important to me. Why should I wait 1 minute for a movie to load when another can do it in 10-seconds? Same for seeking around a disc. 3. SD support. I would prefer to get rid of my RP82SDI with a Blu-ray player so that I only have one source. 4. True source direct output, which includes 480i. 5. The ability to turn off BD-Live to improve load times even further. 6. The ability to force a specific color space to work around problems downstream.

Stacey:
So, based on your immediate preceeding post, is there any reason not to getthe Panasonic to mate with the HD621...
TIA..

Joel,
If you are only concerned about 1080p24 Blu-ray, it is a good choice, especially when you can get the BD60 for $299 and the Costco version for $279.
If you want 1080i60 support, SD support, SACD and DVD-A, then the Oppo is the best choice. They are going to try and get their chroma up to the same level.

Stacey - where does the PS3 stand in terms of chroma resolution?

The Panasonic BD80 allows one to turn off the analogue audio circuits when using HDMI out. They say this improves the Audio Quality!

In terms of chroma detail / resolution, only the new Panasonic's are capable of fully reproducing what is on the disc(s) today. I find that quite shocking, particularly two years down the line from first generation players. Chroma detail is already compressed using 4:2:0 encoding, so you're saying we're losing even more detail, even after this compression, on all players except the Panasonics you list? And I assume your test patterns reveal this issue? I need to check my BDP-S550 right away! Cheers, Mark

Have checked my S550. It passes vertical detail clearly at the highest chroma multiburst but horizontal resolution looks a bit suspect... the blue lines don't look full amplitude compared to the vertical multiburst at the same frequency...
Given that blue is the colour we're least sensitive to I do wonder if this is a visually perceptible issue though in images (not test patterns)? Having said that, I would, as a principle, like my players to deliver everything on the source...
