A HD621 configuration Wiki would certainly be helpful.

Really? Then what is the logic in purchasing a $3k audio processor from meridian? IIUC it is then only separating out the audio and video and allowing me to run to my G68 via coax. Or does the 621 do other processing after it receives the six or eight channels of decoded music. Sorry maybe I'm just not getting it.

The logic is to get high res digital into your processor rather than analogue.

As well as audio upsampling (and possibly / probably apodising) and dejittering there is also video dejittering.

I was about to post that the HD621 allows us to break into the secure HDMI data stream and extract the digital audio because it then passes it on in an approved secure (MMHR) form - thus meeting the copy protection requirements and justifying its cost.

But then I thought....does it actually do that? The alternative options we have seen discussed here imply that the audio datastream is not all that secure. Or am I missing something?

Because it is still one of the sweetest sounding 'pre' amps out there.

If you have a 10k transport and DAC do you expect to hear a difference putting it into a Nad amp at $100 and a Meridian 2 channel amp at $10k??
Of course, and it is no different with a multi channel pre/pro. wink

I guess I'm applying the mentality from the video side where I want the video image to get out of the transport with the minimal amount of processing so that my Radiance XD can do all the processing. Additional processing just adds the possibility of degrading the signal. Maybe it is not the same with the audio side.

We're talking about digital video here. There's very little degradation beyond gross negligence that can occur... I've certainly noticed no issues with video going through the HD621 thus far.

It depends on whether you think video dejittering could cause degraded picture quality!

It's probably my lack of understanding of digital audio processing but in the video realm if you have a excellent video processor you don't even want the chip in the source device to do mpeg decoding. That was the attraction of SDI mods of DVD players so you bypassed all the processing in the player and sent the "raw" signal to the video processor. Now there are players that send a 480i signal out of the HMDI slot for SD DVDs which pretty much has the same effect of bypassing the player although there still might be some video processing taking place in such players. For Blue-Ray I guess just by setting the output to 1080p24 you bypass the processing in the BR player although there still might be some processing taking place.

There ARE surround processors now that decode the new high def sound formats.

Perhaps with the HD621 Meridian is taking the approach that it is not going to get into the decoding, only the jitter control, etc. Also I suppose just the fact that the video signal is being separated from the audio is a benefit according to the Meridian literature.

Great information. How about a little punctuation and formatting so those of us with impaired stream of consciousness interpretion faculties can follow along? smile

I had mine HD621 since Friday, spent few hours trying different options.

When connected before video processor(Crystalio II), all is good.

However when it was the last device in the chain before PJ, there were HDCP handshake drops all the time with black frames on the screen...

The last thing that bugs me is 5.1 96KHz audio from G98 over HDMI. No sound, just static...but CD on the same player passes without a glitch.
