I thought in the spirit of the Music Thread we should have one for movies too.

I just watched a tough , violent , unflinching movie with an indie feel starring Kevin Bacon called ' Death Sentence' . Not for the faint of heart the story is basically a revenge thriller , after No.1 son is senselessly killed , Dad takes it into his own hands etc etc
Not a classic , but not entirely predictable either ...

How do we do this one? Are we looking for acting, screenplay, cinematography etc? I suppose we are all interested in sound so could consider:
good for subs: Apollo 13, Master and Commander, U571, Lord of the Rings The Return of the King.
good for steerage (moving sound around the room): Ronin, Master and Commander, Deliverance, Lord of the Rings The Return of the King
best natural sound/dialogue: ?
and for picture quality, how about Lawrence of Arabia for best film re-mastered to HD?

and for picture quality, how about Lawrence of Arabia for best film re-mastered to HD? It's not out yet! It definitely wins the title of slowest re-master to HD, and I guess the re-mastering will be superb.

I asw it at Bristol a couple of years ago. The desert scenes were stunning, with tremendous depth of field and detail beyond belief (I hope senility is not playing tricks and it was merely upsampled).
I think it was a demonstration by What Hi-Fi of the difference in quality between standard DVD and Blu-Ray.

We need to establish categories and criteria for selection.

Just watched 2001 space oddessy in HD, great movie even better in HD, Was even able to pause the bit where he is reading the instructions for the space toilet. When you magnify in HD you can see that the instructions are in full and in great detail. What other movie could go for 30 minutes before the first speech.
Excellent transfer to HD including the sound track
Next on the list in HD is to watch my best movie of all time - Blade Runner.
861v6 ID41, HD621, G98, MC200, DSP7200, DSP7200HC, DSP5500 (rears), D2500; Oppo BDP83, PS3, - Other rooms 3100, F80

I have to say that Blade Runner on HD-DVD is simply spectacular on every level! (I assume it's the same on Blu-ray). The Vangelis soundtrack is what your M system was made for...

'The Diving Bell and the Butterfly ' on DVD is a fabulous ( unbelievably true ) story . The Sound and Picture is not 'demo' material but the story and acting are first class and its gripping from the opening scene .
Highly recommended ,
