I purchased a M-Audio Audiophile 192 board for my computer. I plan on putting my record collection on to a hard drive and start a music server. The problem I have found is my G68 will only accept 24/96 to it's SPDIF inputs. I figured if it could output 24/192 it could input the same. This is like those TV's that will output 1080P but not accept anything higher than a 1080i input. Has anyone else tried this with any success?

I really don't think you'll find much difference between 24/96 and 24/192.

I believe all Meridian DSP Speakers are limited 24/96 as well.

Vinyl's frequency range won't extend anywhere near that which would require 192kHz sampling...

Anybody know at what frequency the Meridian kit works internally? I'd be surprised if it were above 24/96.

I think 24/96 will be more than adequate to digitize vinyl... Whether it is possible to do 100% transparently is another matter.

I think Meridian surround processors have 24/96 DAC's but some of there CD and DVD players have 24/192 DAC's.

Seems like I recall Bob Stewart saying for 24bit depth, anything over 48kHz is really not audible regardless of source...
In addition, I'm in complete agreement with Mark here - Vinyl can be a very sweet sound, but it's mechanical properties can't transport anything near a 192kHz requirement.

hevac1 - What do you plan to use for converting the LP analogue to digital? The G68? or the Audiophile board?

The OA13 861 cards have 24/192 DACs.
But I'm not sure if the 861 can feed it 24/192.

Hi Hevac,

I've got one of those boards too, but I've been having real trouble with it. I'd be interested to know if you have the board drop out after 20 mins or so and require a re-start of the audio app (eg Pandora goes silent, then hitting pause/play brings it back to life).

I've seen a few forums where this has been mentioned. Tried changing tonnes of settings in the driver, but no luck.

Sound quality is great - for a while :-)

BTW - On topic again, I've got a feeling that the DAC/ADCs in the G68 are rated at 192kHz, but only ever run up to 96kHz. Also I think that officially, SPDIF/TOSLINK are only specced to 96kHz. Stuff can run faster, but it's not official. Don't know where I heard it, but I did.

Cheers,

Mark.

Mark,

I think we had this discussion before and the G68 has the same DAC's as the 568.2. 24/96k sigma delta DAC's. The 861 has the option to use 192k DAC's as George said. I would think Meridian would use it as a selling feature if they had 192k DAC's like they did with the 596 when that came out.

I'm a bit confused regarding the focus of discussion.

Why are the G68 DAC's even a consideration? I thought he was feeding digital to the G68 via the Audiophile board. If so, all decimation would be in the digital domain.. no?

If not, and he's talking about using the G68 ADCs to create the digital files from the LPs, then he can't get more than a 48K out via G68 digital anyway, right?

I'm soooo confused....

The point was if he RIPed his LP's at 24/192 he has nothing that will likely play 24/192, from Meridian anyway.

All internal processing is at 24/96K at this time.
The maximum acceptable digital input is 24/96K.

I think the G08 CD will do internal upsampling to 24/192K but only on the analog outputs.

For a number of years, M has been using Analog Devices 1852 DACs which are indeed 24/192K capable however there's no way to get a digital in @ 24/192K to the DACs.

Ken:

If you read the relevant works of the Acoustic Renaissance for Audio you'll find Bob's thoughts on a fully transparent channel.

It's 56K give or take plus room for a reasonable guard band -- I think the number floating around is 65K. For convenience sake, this is 96K in practice for the simple reason that it was 2x the prevailing capture standard.
