Mark, I havent played my DVE yet- are you saying even with the HDMI output I am not getting the full color depth I should be getting? My observations are that the Panny BR player I have has the same color depth as what I see on HD DVDs...

Jerry, depends on how you have the XA1 configured - if you are using HDMI/RGB and have engaged the Lumagen's inverse 601->709 filter then you will have correct colours. Any other setup will give you SD colours only. UNLESS I am doing something wrong... I have a post on AVSForum asking for corroboration/contradiction, but so far only chatter in the thread...

Mark, would you be able to provide an md5 checksum for the ISO?

Many thanks! The eXpress CheckSum Calc 1.0 uses the MD5 algorithm as I got the same checksum . So now you know! As I did my last update via the internet, can you confirm: 1) You updated from 2.0? 2) You burn the image to standard DVD and simply put it in the player? 3) How long it takes? Thanks, Joel

I updated from 2.1, but I believe each firmware can upgrade any revision. I burned the ISO to a CD. Turn the player on and pop the disc in - you will see a message VER UP or something like that - you need to have your display active and you will seen an on-screen message asking whether you want to update - select YES. Then go off for 20 minutes or so. Once complete you'll see a message on the front panel or perhaps the machine may have turned itself off if. Either way, remove the disc from the tray and restart the player - that's it! Good luck I've done all my updates via disc images... Mark

Hummm- Ive done my updates via the ethernet. I wonder what version Im running. Ill have to check today as I will be home under the weather.
I have no idea Mark how to do what you are talking about as Im not running a Lumagen. Im running the Crystalio II. Going from memory, it allows one to configure the HDMI input as either PC or Video or automatic and then I think it does allow you to select YrCrCb or something like that or RGB etc... I have everything set to auto. Since I've never played the DVE disc, what test should I look for to confirm whether or not Im in the SD color space?
best regards, Jerry

Thanks again Mark. You're online more than me! IIRC, there are minor firmware revisions available online, but given the option I would take a MD5 verified, burned and burn verified CD image every time. It's all happening at the moment; I've "installed" an ND2 filter on my PJ with good results; My copy of HD DVE is in the post; I've just ordered a colorimeter so I can measure and play around with grayscale; And the bug-fix firmware for my JVC HD1 is "imminent".

Jerry,
The test pattern is the first under
Video Tests->Evaluation
It looks like colour bars with the top having a 601 label (SD) and the bottom row having a 709 label (HD).
In order to view the test properly you must be able to ouput a single colour R, G or B - your scaler may allow you to do this - eg you first want to test blue is correct by only outputting blue light - once you confirm that blue is correct - switch to green only light output - with this happening you can clearly see which colourspace is being used as only one row, the 601 or the 709, will match the background - this is the colourspace which is being used...
On the Lumagen you can select which colour to output. On a CRT projector you would cap the tubes you want to block. Other projectors may allow you to do this. Or you could use the filter which comes with DVE but I note a comment in the manual which says it may not work for this test.
From the manual:
"Chapter 1: Verify Matrix
Function: Assist in determining the matrix used to decode the video for display and show the difference between images encoded to both 601 and 709.
Pattern Layout: Split screen among color bar test patterns, followed by image material, followed by another set of color bars. Each is split and labeled 601 or 709.
Descriptions of Use: This combination of test patterns and images was designed to illustrate the difference between 601 and 709 encoding. Each system works within its own domain, but not matching the type of decoder to the system used to encode the video will mess up the color reproduction.
The color bars with gray reference have been split top to bottom. In evaluating the type of decoder being used first observe the red green and blue channels individually. The top and bottom half should not be equal in any of the colors. When one or the other color bar set is being
properly decoded the largest difference between the two will be seen in the green channel, followed by red and finally the blue. If neither is correct its time to determine if an adjustment to the decoder is needed. Before doing that you need to determine what device is doing the decoding. If the connection to the display device is via a DVI cable chances are what ever is ahead of the DVI cable is doing the decoding and any adjustments will have to be done there.
The display device can complicate detecting what decoder is being used. As an example a number of single chip DLP projectors convert an incoming RGB signal to the Y Cr Cb domain for processing then take it back to the RGB domain. This processing could introduce its own set of errors into the picture. This display would first have to be calibrated from a known quality RGB video source.
Another important point is that if color matrix correction is used to get the right primary colors the red, green and blue filters provided in DVE won`t work. The projector must have its own red only, green only and blue only display capability. Once it has been determined that the RGB display capability of the display is correct adjustments can be made to the color control of the Y Cr Cb decoder so that one or the other decoding, 601 or 709, is correct in all three channels."
