When installing passive in-ceiling speakers, besides ideally having a manufacturer’s integral ‘back can’, convention typically recommends adding a suitable fire-hood into the ceiling void. Alternatively, does anyone have experience with retrofitting/using DynaBox Speaker Enclosures? Apparently, installing DynaBox outperforms conventional fire-hoods. Why the DynaBox Beats Standard Fabric/Metal Fire Hoods
Standard fire hoods are designed strictly for building code compliance (retaining the fire rating of a plasterboard ceiling). They are typically made of woven intumescent fabric or rigid metal boxes. Acoustically, they act as primitive ‘drums’ - the back-wave energy from the speaker cone strikes the hard or loose material, bouncing straight back through the speaker cone, causing acoustic distortion and muddy mid-bass.
The DynaBox is a completely different piece of engineering: The Material Composition: It is made of flexible, ultra-dense 1 lb/sq ft flexi-vinyl (Dynil). It does not ring, vibrate, or echo.
The SoundSnake and Back-Wave Foam: The kit includes a multi-layer acoustic foam insert (the SoundSnake) that lines the inner perimeter, alongside an egg-crate acoustic foam pad for the top.
The Acoustic Result: Instead of reflecting the back-wave energy through the speaker cone, the DynaBox completely absorbs it. This drops the distortion floor, tightens up the mid-bass response, and ensures that the critical 80 Hz crossover transition to your subwoofer is completely clean and transparent.

convention typically recommends adding a suitable fire-hood into the ceiling void. Having this discussion with an electrician recently concerning installing down-lighters. He said that building codes required a back-hood with a sealing ring that expanded when hot (i.e. if there was a fire) to prevent the fire migrating between floors. Guess that is the "intumescent" part? Think it would be wise to ensure any back-box meets building code (and therefore insurance compliance) before worrying about the sound quality.

Thanks for the response. Although available to buy in the UK, the UK-based European HQ representative subsequently admitted their DynaBox does not meet UK fire prevention standards. So, on further investigation, the Firetopper Pro II will fully accommodate the proportions of my chosen overhead passive speakers. It features a triple-layer design consisting of two intumescent layers surrounding fire-retardant acoustic foam. This dampens the rear wave, reducing sound bleed into the rooms upstairs by approximately 3dB to 10dB while optimizing the mid-bass response of the speaker’s cone.
