The passive cables do earc. The likely reason of the active cables not doing earc is that by and large. these are mainly used for projectors for which there is no reason to need earc. TV apps generally don't have the best audio quality so using an outboard streamer such as Apple TV or nvidia shield provides a better experience. If one is looking at needing more HDMI ports the the CI provides, an external HDMI switch is still a better option than using earc.
