I have the 2nd edition so it's still a limitation of the sub. I'm consifdering a 2nd DSW.2 so i have more headroom. Apart from that; i have a trinnov with room correction i should be able to determine the problematic frequencies and lower the levels for them..

A compromise which is not great for such expensive kit. I'd forgotten about the issue till your post. I might raise with my dealer. My DSW is the first edition so interesting it still occurs on the .2 version.

I couldn't agree more. I think It's really quite embarrassing/disgusting that Meridian have made a subwoofer that costs £3000 (£3750 if you buy a .2) that struggles so badly at a certain frequency. I could understand if we were pushing 20/25hz through it at insane volume levels. I know that may sound harsh because it performs so well the rest of the time. As we have both said. With Dune and Tenet. But it is still very disappointing.
I really appreciate the responses though and thank you for your time.
I would love to know what Meridian think of this though. As I'm sure you, and possibly many others would.

I ordered a 2nd DSW.2 as this is clearly a hardware limitation of the subwoofer. Using 2 of these together with my trinnov (stacked) sub correction i'm sure it will solve the popping as the subs will be attenuated according this diagram:



Expensive fix, but beside the popping fix it will enhance my complete experience (i hope:))

I look forward to the results when you've acquired your 2nd DSW.2! Even then I can't really run to trading in my v8 for a Trinnov and buying a 2nd DSW!

This is exactly what Meridian's DSP firmware is supposed to handle. It sounds like you guys reproduced the problem/frequency on both mk1 and mk2 of DSW subwoofer. Any chance you can make an official support request for fix via dealer/Meridian? That way more can reference the problem and Meridian can fix it in time for DSW XE.

There is a sine output available from the front panel of the Meridian processors. Can you run it and report back @frequency of the pop/bottoming?

I have used the sine wave function up and down slowly from 80Hz and no issues occur at volume set to 75. Makes furniture and the closest 5200 rattle (the chassis not the cones) but not the DSW. So very curious.

Further investigation shows that the Bluray HD version of Alita is fine - the soundtrack is DTS-MA HD. The 4k Bluray disc is Dolby Atmos and my Oppo decodes the Dolby TruHD soundtrack to PCM (as the standard Bluray decodes to PCM from DTS-MA HD). A 4k streaming version via Disney on my Sky box also does not show the issue but then I guess the stream doesn't have the same bandwidth for the soundtrack.

Am I right in thinking the 4k disc has more bandwidth and there is maybe something in it that the Oppo/861/DSW can't cope with?

I have tried the Bluray copy and it still happens.

If I added a second DSW would my 6ks still cover full range?
I had heard that if you add a second DSW all bass below 80hz is directed to them.
I wouldn't mind adding a second DSW but not if what I heard is true.

I asked Rick at Audio Images (I bought my DSW and other items from him) about my issue and he agreed that the 4k version probably has greater bandwidth than the standard Bluray although that doesn't account for your condition.

Paraphrasing his reply he gave me solutions.

"" Either:
Keep the overall volume to a level where it handles the signal,
Or
Limit the DSW signal as I suggested in the Meridian Surround Controller config
Or
Get a Sub which will handle the signal at the volume you require ""

I go for the first solution as the instances are quite short and so far only apply to a couple of my films.

I'm not experienced enough to answer your other queries about a second DSW. Also any extra purchase is beyond my means at the moment sadly!

I’m curious - how low does such sweep go? Wonder if these could be infrasonic? That you have had much higher output with other tracks would imply that the problem frequency is lower than what’s on those other tracks. I’m surprised that the Meridian firmware, bass management, limiters, etc would not filter such a dangerous signal, however. It also implies a firmware fix should be possible.

I have taken the step of buying a second DSW from a fellow HH. (It was a pleasure doing business with you Darren).
The sub is installed. Daisy chained to the first one as LFE channel.
Calibration set at -5.5.
Tried Passengers scene which was causing problems, volume to 75. Not a problem.
Went up to 80, and it was completely fine. Shook the room but no issues with subs.
Looks like we have a fix.
Consider it an upgrade as well.

Hi Nick

After reading your post and having no life whatsoever apart from an obsession about my Meridian system, I ordered Passengers and watched it for the first time a few days ago.

What a great film by the way, which I may have seen on my partners 42" telly on sky movies as some of it resonated with me but as she was not particularly into sci-fi I didn't immediately recall it.

But, to get back to the dialogue, I have just played the opening sequence up until Jim's pod opens, at 70 in DTS, I experienced no crackling or pops but just humungous levels of bass and rumble especially during the meteorite storm.

To think I nearly purchased a DSW1500 to replace my Velodyne!

I expect this message is of no use whatsoever, but thought I would let you know.
