Ok room number two now....

861v8 added back into the mix and DSW was on the boat with the 818.

Not 100% sure we're set up right just yet - hence asking how you guys would set up the DSW in the M Config programme with the M6's at the front and the 7200HCSE in the middle.
My limited knowledge seems a bit weird that the 7200HCSE is a much "bigger" DSP than the M6's so not sure how to balance things.
Feels like setting 7200 to "Small" feels a bit counter intuitive...

Anyway photos....

Any ideas and suggestions from you guys on settings to try in terms of set up with a less than balanced set of DSP's then let me know!

Enjoy!

The best way to balance out that setup would be a nice pair of 7200s grin

I'm sort of half joking, but also not. The 7200HC is a beast, and a lovely speaker. I would think you'd have to dial that back so much to 'match' the M6s, firstly it's a bit of a waste of a 7200HC and secondly, I'm not sure you'll ever quite tonally match or blend them in whatever you do. Be interested to see if you are able to achieve a satisfactory blend there.

Couple of things come to mind. Firstly, the centre isn't typically loaded with LFE and even if it was, I'm not sure I'd want the woofers to be flapping about whilst trying to deliver the nuances of dialogue (or vocals in Trifield). This is only going to matter at higher levels, to be fair, but I'd try both and see which you like best. If I had a large subwoofer, I'd set the centre to small, even the 7200. At high volumes, taking bass duties off a speaker helps massively. I've no personal experience of the DSW so I'm not sure if this logic applies to it especially with a hugely capable centre speaker in the mix.

Second thought is about the location of your DSW. It isn't clear what the layout of the room is from the photos, but did you choose that location as it sounded the best or for aesthetic reasons? I'd have thought with the (assumed) MLP towards the back of the room facing the TV, the DSW might be better placed to the right of the 7200.

That option is not available as I am more broke than broke now, and as the 818 and DSW took over a year to get here I would not want to risk any more! I originally had 7200SE's with the 7200HCSE before I upgraded to the 8kSE's....

I am gonna have to play with various versions and work with what we have, so any suggestions as how best to manage things greatly appreciated smile

Thanks guys!

OK will try small setting - I guess then we're into neutral or bass heavy act, or do we just to LFE and at what frequency do we set the filter?

Have to admit there is a few aesthetic reasons..... I didn't expect it to be so big and don't particularly like it ;-)

M6's are 14ft from the listening position and 7200 is 12ft 6. So it's a long room compared to width. The listening position is central. Sofa at the end of the room.

Ideally from aesthetic perspective I would put the DSW on the back wall behind the sofa, which would be 1ft behind the chair! I have no idea what that would do!!!!

We can play around....

The easiest options I have would be
1. right of the 7200 as you said
2. where it is on the photo's above
3. back left corner behind sofa (where big lamp is on these photo's below)
4. central behind the sofa mid way along back wall (1ft behind seating place) - aesthetic preferred bottom photo where leopard photo is...

They're the easiest ones!

Photo's from a while back pre-861 and pre TV to give context... (oh and bookshelves moved so TV would fit!

So, a few hours testing and lugging things around and weirdly behind the sofa may currently be the best sounding place....

Lots more playing to go with, corner was a train wreck, left side accentuates how loose some of the glass windows are (go get more putty - note to self)

Still playing with Large and Small settings for speakers and still not sure what filters to set other than std 80Hz but other than realising I'm not particularly strong to romp 30kg boxes around, getting better than before....

Any more comments to suggest ideas??

Hi Chris,

Still got your 5200SLs!! Added 5200HC, 3200 rears, 861v6 and DSW. About to upgrade v6 to v8 and 5200HC to SE.

I've had tricky issues with my DSW position and integration. Originally had it in the left corner to the left of the left front. Sort of happy there but realised it wasn't functioning correctly so moved it to right of left front so it's just under and to the left of the centre. Works better there. Rick of Audio images suggest I put it near to where I listen and then find where in the room the bass is best and put it there. Yet to do this as it will probably conflict with my wife's idea of where things go - she's very tolerant of my M stuff but enjoys it too!

Worth playing around with the config too. I've tried it with the DSW as LFE for multichannel music and movie and not using it for two channel movie logic and setting centre to small (2ch logic doesn't allow combination of DSW as LFE cos it's not there i guess). Also tried setting them all to large and again using DSW for LFE only. Tried every combination of small and large and DSW as LFE only or sending bass from centre to it along with LFE. Never used bass heavy mode for DSW.

Currently settled on setting centre to small and sub set to centre not mono so bass from centre goes to DSW in all modes. Rears send bass to fronts. I leave the filters as they are and apply room correction.

If you use the config program then with 861 M6 7200 and DSW it defaults to the centre to large except in 2 ch movie logic mode where it sets them all to small and sends bass from M6 7200 to the DSW so bass heavy mono. Not sure this will sound nice.

Hope this all helps!

Best regards
Bob

Morning sir,

Absolutely lovely to hear from you and wonderful to hear the 5200SL's are still going strong.

Sounds like a great set up you're building.

Defo a wife consideration with the DSW, but actually a Chris consideration as well. It's a big old lump and this cinema room while "cozy", isn't the biggest in the world to hide a "big footstool" or "ah you have a new coffee table"......

Glad that I'm not being totally daft on all the testing here - simple version for me is that the set up and getting a decent sound is a lot harder than the rest of the M kit. Lot's more trial and error. I know7200 and M6 isn't the best combination so we have to make the best with what we have, and I know it seems daft to make a 7200 "small" as it's one of the best full range speakers there is ;-)

Anyways as I've got a bit more strength back after last manoeuvring session, I may well have another play around.

Maybe the issue is I spend less and less time in there because I still can't process the upgrade with the 818v3 and 8kSE's with new firmware. really really enjoying them and that translates into watching less movies!

Keep in touch

Best

C

So good to hear that you're still taking care of them smile

Settled in here, using lockdown to do a whole lot more listening than usual - so not too bad an excuse!

Stay Safe all,
