Just trying out my 7200.2's as a stereo pair in a different room instead of my movie based system, they are being fed via a MC200.

I have set them up as type 1 and they work fine but when I go into setup and change them to corner and adjust the balance to deal with my dodgy hearing, the settings don't appear to save, according to the manual you just power on and off. When I go into normal operation the balance is back to neutral so assume I have also lost the corner setting as well.

Is there a way to check the firmware version I have, hasn't been updated for a few years but not aware of any recent changes. I recall that to do the last firmware upgrade I had to borrow a special cable from the dealers as the 7200's don't have a RS232 port.

I have set the EBA setting to 'Y' is this correct for this setup.

On the subject of EBA, was a firmware patch ever released for the 5500's.

With the speakers in standby hold the MSR+ close to the display and press the display button, the latest version is 2.63

Regarding EBA you have a choice, yes means it’s on, no means it’s off, SL (I think) means you can enable and disable using the MSR+.

No EBA for 5500’s according to the fw release notes.

Provided a SpeakerLink controller is in the chain.

Thanks, I was pressing display but not in standby mode. I am on 1.60, so one major release behind, in the release notes it says it adds EBA but see that was also in 1.60 so hopefully an enhanced version.

Checked also the 5500's and 3100's and no changes required for them.

Am I correct in thinking that I need a special cable to do the firmware upgrade for the 7200's?

Still no joy in getting the setup settings to stick on power off.

You will need the firmware files first of all.

Then you will need a Windows PC with the Meridian common installer program available here.

To transfer the new firmware to the speaker assuming your PC has USB but not an RS232 9 pin connector then I would suggest an adapter cable like this which has to be a NULL modem cable and then an RS232 to RJ45 adapter like this which you can plug into the speaker.

Thanks, I already have a Startech USB to serial port convertor that I use for connecting to Astro equipment and also the 861 for firmware updates, therefore in effect I have a laptop with RS232, is it then just the last lead in your list that I require?

Check if startach doesn’t have integrated null modem capabilities. I have a feeling that it does.

If it does you just use the appropriate gendered cables with straight through wiring - null modem is crossover just like between ears and mouth.

If memory serves, early DSP manuals said to just turn off at the rear after configuring (for boundary settings anyway) later editions said to press "store" on the MSR(+) whilst still pointed at the display before powering off.

Re the cable, for the sake of £27 v the cost of the speakers, have ordered the two items. Don't think my existing cable was a null modem.

Tried store but that did not work, then tried Function Store and that showed STORE on the display, this has saved the corner settings but not the balance! Still the corner setting was the key one as can't change that on the fly. In the detailed settings I have Bal set to Y, presume this just enables the balance control.

I had forgotten just how frustrating Meridian stuff can be but worth the pain eventually.

Ah, forgot the "Fn"! I don't recall ever reading about a permanent balance setting, other than having the function enabled. Might it be the kind of setting that is retained once set on the fly, as long as the speakers only go in and out of standby? ie it will be lost when doing a full power cycle, but remain otherwise, a bit like the Axis setting?

Just tried to download the firmware but see it is restricted to partners only. Hopefully my dealer will download it for me. A bit 'big brother' for my liking.
