Breaking News: HIGHRESAUDIO to stop offering MQA. Proprietary system solutions and licensing models aren't what customers want. MQA is NOT lossless, the original signal is never recovered, estimate to recover at most 17bits (reduces the sampling rate), reduces the frequency range, SNR reduced by 3bit, aliasing with artifacts at 18kHz. MQA encoding filters manipulate drastically the original source. No analysis tools are available to verify the encoded MQA content. Therefore no quality control is possible. highresaudio.com stands for offering purity, original mastering source, none manipulated, tweaked or up-sampled content and codecs that are widely supported and offer use of freedom.
"We hope that MQA will adjust all the above issues. We are truly disappointed, the way MQA has progressed in the past year. We have been mislead and blinded by trust and promises."
Main system:G65, 218, HD621 2 x DSP5200SE, 1 x DSP5200HCSE, 2 x DSP5200SL, Power Sound Audio S1512, DSP Anti-Mode 2.0 Dual core, NuPrime H16AES, 518, Dune HD Homatics Box R 4K Plus running CoreElec 21.3, Oppo 103D and SqueezeTouch. Atmos, MQA and Trifield!
Unfortunate? I would be more inclined to say that Hi-Res-Audios words were "Damming". I was planning to go down to the Bristol show on Friday to listen to MQA and see whether it delivers what it claims. I will still go despite Hi-Res's views, but am getting worried now.
For the time being my investment in/upgrade to an 861 just 15 months ago is beginning to feel questionable. When I purchased the 861 I was fully expecting to be able to jump on the Dolby Atmos bandwagon at some point in the future. However as long as that door remains closed, the MQA option (via a 218?) at least gave the ability to continue moving forwards with my current not insubstantial investment in HT kit. I'm really hoping that MQA will deliver what it claims.
For 20 years as an 'M' owner I've been spoiled by having several options to upgrade as each year passes. Whether or not I am ultimately able to go down the MQA road or the Atmos road, I still love the sound of my M system.
This is a worrying development given that High Res was supportive as opposed to Linn who never had any love for MQA. MQA and Bob S need to respond right away. Credibility is at stake.
Is it that they have conceded that MQA is number one, a streaming format and sales of downloads will not be profitable in the future?
I have purchased from them in the past and I found their website slow and difficult to navigate.
They really haven't given this a chance and to blame the technology and authentication issues rather than the availability of MQA albums is their loss.
MQA will be available elsewhere.

@TartanB My advice (although I realise that you didn't ask for it !) is to stop reading; just listen. Go & hear MQA for yourself & make up your own mind.
Probably better not to listen at a 'show', try to get a demo which more closely represents your home (or other) listening environment, at a dealer or wherever.
Lots of us have systems which we're 'frustrated with' at the moment because we can't exploit something that wasn't even around when our system was conceived, although, to be fair it looks like in your case you were already aware of MQA when you made your purchase / upgrade ? Anyway, fingers crossed, we'll be 'ok' once the 218's start delivery....hopefully... Enjoy the music !
Just listen. The most complicated signal processing in the whole chain starts at your ear. I'm sure that's what Bob means when he goes on about twigs in the forest. Auditory processing has evolved. It's not a simple engineering solution in the usual sense. It's so complicated that concepts like lossless don't have much meaning. A machine designed to make sounds rich in auditory cues and sympathetic to auditory processing would be unlikely to satisfy an engineer. The hard engineering approach would strap a jet on an owl to make it fly faster through the forest at night. Trust your ears.
