I have found the passthrough plus Explorer² is considerably better than Tidal MQA plus my much more expensive Moon 750D DAC. I posted on this earlier.

But the reason for posting is the CPU usage from Tidal seems ridiculously high in passthrough. I have a much quieter MacBook Pro when using Pure Music for playing MQA downloads. Tidal streaming experience quite off-putting at present as a result. Depends of course on where your computer is sited....

Did you get any indication on the nature of the Tidal problems, Joel??!!!

I think the problems were fixed in the recent TIDAL app update.

It should now be possible to run Explorer 2 in two modes:

a. MQA passthrough (Explorer 2 does all the MQA decoding) and

b. non-MQA passthrough (leave passthrough box unchecked, TIDAL now does first level MQA decoding, Explorer 2 unfolds the next level to 24/192).

Both options will light up all lights on the Explorer 2 on 24/192 MQA material.

This should give a like for like comparison on the abilities of TIDAL app decoding versus Explorer 2 decoding. At least I think this is the case - Joel may comment further.

In your test, does the Explorer 2 outperform the Moon 750 DAC on non MQA material?

The Tidal app can detect if Meridian equipment is connected. To get the best result it is important to go into settings and click through to the second stage of settings.

I assume this only applies if your Meridian gear is connected via USB to your laptop?

It sees my Explorer 2 via USB for sure. It's in settings. Funny thing is, it saw my Explorer but I had no sound from a USB 3 socket. With USB 2 it all worked. Windows 10.

No 18 in the Hall of fame smile I have simple tastes; I am content to settle for the best:
GIK monster bass panels, rear wall. QNAP TVS 471i3. Roon into DSP5200SE via 210/ 218 zone... Explorer 2. Bluesound Pulse 2, Mini & Flex. 596v1, 518, Foxsat HD, Sony BDP, Pioneer 5090, 2 Chromecast's for LRB videos. MS200 to F80 for a Roon zone
