I buy the cheapest kettle or toaster available. £12.00 perhaps with a view to replace annually.
Three years alter, they are both still going strong.

For expensive items that you expect to last, don't forget the 6 year rule in UK with the seller. Some retailers have already woken up to this and won't quibble with a replacement - Apple Store for instance. I got a brand new motherboard fitted free on my well out of warranty MBP - the moment 6 year rule was mentioned.

But this won't work on items where you would not expect them to last, like cheap kettles and toasters.

So far, it looks as though Jura, Gaggia, DeLonghi, Krups, and, Miele, all provide an after-sales repair service for their bean-to-cup machines: the exception being Bosch.

I am surprised to see less-than-favourable end-user reviews for the Jura machines - as I thought these were the 'gold standard' in such coffee machines.

I loved the coffee the Jura made but it was so unreliable and with repairs running into hundreds rather than tens of pounds it had to go... Although, of course, now it's still working fine with my son, but I suspect he drinks less than we did.

My experience is the opposite with Breville, I have had both a coffee machine and a toaster for close to three years and they see extensive use. No issues whatsoever.

Perhaps Breville is better made for the USA market.

My experience is the same. Dualit seem only capable of making toasters. The rest is rubbish.

KitchenAid is much more consistent across the range, if you want well-made expensive gear in your kitchen.

I too have had a Jura S9 coffee machine purchased just under 8 years ago and love the coffee it makes. It probably makes 6-8 coffees every day.

As for reliability we have had two issues - the first repaired under warranty just before the guarantee ran out. The last fault was last year at a cost of approximately £200 including Jura collecting and bringing back but otherwise it has been working well.

I would hate to be without it as with the right beans it seems far superior to Costa-Bucks.

My only petty issue with it is the cappuccino/ latte nozzle is not height adjustable - so it is difficult to get tall glasses under when making a latte. I know- first world problem.

Gaggia appears to fall under the same branding as Phillips and Saeco coffee machines - with identical machines sporting one of these monikers.

Does anyone own one of these? If so, opinions?

Although I have yet to settle on a new B2C machine, I am gravitating towards Jura. However, it concerns me that the brew unit cannot be removed for routine cleaning.

Even so, I'm currently looking at the slim-line ENA9 One Touch. It's only 2cm wider than my Tassimo T85.

It would appear that any criticism of a given Jura machine primarily focuses on those not specifically made in Switzerland.

Separately, I contacted Miele directly, who advised me that although the electronics are designed by Miele, their coffee machines are manufactured by Jura.

Despite my considerable misgivings, I've ordered a De'Longhi B2C super-automatic from John Lewis.

The De'Longhi rep provided a suitable demonstration at the John Lewis Birmingham open-evening recently. Contrary to some De'Longhi reviews that I've read, the cappuccino produced was sufficiently hot enough to burn my tongue.

A £150 promotional discount helped ease the pain, together with a further £100 price-matching discount from John Lewis (thanks Debenhams). Overall, with the refund gained from my Bosch VeroCafe, the cost-to-change was £315.

While there's four new Miele countertop B2C machines due for release some time in January, I wasn't prepared to wait that long, and, it would have cost a further £938 for the Miele privilege.

I hope that I don't regret my purchasing decision.

With all the discounts it sounds like you made a profit?
