Let's keep in mind that, unlike with the 861, the G68 with a linear power supply is a do-it-yourself upgrade, which not everyone will feel comfortable handling on their own. Being DIY, you of course do not get the health check and extended warranty either.

If I get an 861v4, what cards do I need?
This will be for my DVD/SACD/CD multi-player, a turntable with home-brew phono stage, a TIVO, and tape deck, with room for expansion.

I'm soon going to find out what this Meridian thing is all about.
I've made a deal on an older 861v4 and HD621. It has 2 OA13 cards to feed my Bryston. I'm having it sent directly to Meridian USA to have the linear supply / health check done. It should be there Monday, and hopefully back to me in a couple of weeks.

Hello Russ,
You will love it. I enjoy my 861v4 very much. I live in Frederick and work in Arlington.
I had Marc Koval send me a Linear Power Supply which I installed. It sounds wonderful. The old power supply was frying and I just caught it in time before major damage was done.
Happy Holidays!

Thanks JPB,
Are you using DSP speakers, or analog out to an amp? Was this your first Meridian? Any tips for setup?

You need to install Meridian config program on your laptop/computer so you can make adjustments on the fly and set it up with ease.
To do that you also need to get RS232-USB adaptor cable.
Regards, Kishore

And a RS232 Null modem cable.
Plus a Sound Pressure Level (SPL) meter and a long tape measure.
Yes really!

I've got a measurement microphone, An older laptop with a serial port, and a null modem cable (or I can make one). I tried to load the Universal Configurator at work and it failed when it tried to contact the mothership. Do you need an internet connection to run Mconfig? If I get time this weekend I'll try to get this old laptop up on the network and see if I can install it.
How does the microphone hook to the 861?

Hi, You company's fireware security may be blocking installation. I suggest you try again from home. You don't need an internet connection to run Mconfig. The microphone connects to an analogue input on you processor. First you need to set up a microphone close to the listening position, and connect this to an appropriate input on the digital surround controller. On the G68 Digital Surround Controller this will be A8 (L). On the 861 Reference Digital Surround Controller this can be any analogue input; input A1 (L) on card IA00 is chosen by default. If you want to read up on MRC, check out the forums wiki. Regards, Carl

Hello Russ,
It was my first Meridian device. I use it for my home theather to drive my analog amp.
I would be glad to offer assistance with configuration when you get ready to set things up.
I could send you my confiruration file so you could have a look-see how mine is setup.
The forum here is a valuable resource and the folks are very helpful. It certainly adds to the products value in knowing you can get this level of support from fellow users.

Thanks for the offer John. The 861 just arrived from Meridian USA. I'll be powering it up for the first time later tonight hopefully. How long did it take you to get yours set up and working in your system?

Russ, It took me a few days to become comfortable with the software configuration program. Then I sat down and built my configuration file and loaded it up. Seems I was always going back and tweaking it and about the time I felt fairly good with the software I was done until I added something new to the system. Then if it had been some time is was sort of a re-learn process on the software but it comes back to mind fairly quickly. I think I spent the first day walking around it like a new car in disbelief that I actually owned one. For a man of my means this was a stretch for me! I know you will have a lot of enjoyment listing and configuring the system. I think I enjoy both equally. John
