Leaving aside if there would be any audio benefits its simply a question of economics.

From a users perspective: A good pair of late model DSP5000s are what 1500 a pair at most, would anyone really spend say 2000 to upgrade them? I believe most would save the money towards those 5200s or 7200s you mention.

From Meridian's perspective: To justify the R&D effort in both time and cost, how many units would they have to sell? There is also the marketing angle to consider, even if it were economical, I suspect that only current modes would be considered.

The factors in VK's post (3rd in this thread), need be considered when musing over 'Wish Lists'.

Regards,
Carl

Yes, I'd spend that to upgrade them, because I didn't get on with 5200s. This is probably even more true for 6Ks.

From the Meridian perspective of enough units, though, I have no idea...

OK, so Meridian are unlikely to do it, what about HHers doing it for themselves? There are a few engineers around, modest incentive for them? Group buy, small amount of unofficial input from M's engineers (a la input to the forum...).

Sorry this is probs off topic now. Just thinking out loud.

Assuming all the DSP is in one board, you're talking about using a 5200 board and firmware in a 5k which makes no sense to me at all. It would be throwing away all the work done to optimise the speakers via DSP - a large chunk of their USP.

Agreed about the DSP optimisation, if that's what's required. Do we know it would def require a 5200 board, or would just a new input board be required before the DSP board?

I'd be up for a 3rd party mod la Reviver, IF Meridian didn't do something themselves...

Assuming we're talking electronics to match 8000.2 and maybe new tweeter to match Anniversary (and a fresh 5yr warranty) my take is:

Below 5k - no brainer, Yes!
Above 10k - probably too much, No!

In between would require a serious think about...

+1 on Mac MConfig. Browser based would be better still.

I would like to see Meridian 're-introduce' a 'basics' range of components.

Nearly 20 years ago I was able to buy Meridian 500 series kit piecemeal as and when I could afford it, without requiring finance. Then, individual components typically cost 100's rather than 1,000's.

This would facilitate starting with 2 channel components, and then being able to add the extra kit to enable surround music/movies.

Now, I feel as though I would have to take out a small mortgage to amass a modest/modern Meridian system - which I am not prepared to do as I head towards retirement (and neither do I want to buy second-hand).

Also, given the arrival of Pure Audio (Bluray) discs into the marketplace, a Meridian Bluray player would be most welcome.

What components do you think are missing? Most of the 500 series has a direct G series equivalent. The 518 is akin to the AC200 and the Director is like the 566.

I think they will be trying to make fewer disc spinners rather than more, given the unstoppable move to streamed material.

Perhaps a more useful approach would be to work with a small number of like-minded companies such as Oppo, who make components that M doesn't want to but that M buyers will typically have in a system.

The co-operation would ensure an RS232 interface on the component with a full 1-to-1 map to all M comms commands, and some expected level of output spec appropriate to the unit (eg multichannel PCM over co-ax for an Oppo).

Then M produce a standardised mini comms box that allows third party components to be seamlessly integrated into an M system. Physically small and relatively low cost.
