Just looking online. So is the Amazon - TS-269L actually compatible?
Specs suggest it uses an Atom core processor as the majority of their high end models.

Is that the starting point for compatibility?

Agree it is nice to see M moving in the right direction.

Being the impatient type I was wondering whether if someone that owns both a QNAP and Synolog that has been able to pull the app off the QNAP after install and move it to the Synology?

Other than the packaging it would probably port quite easily I'd suspect.

This sound like moving or changing use of M's intellectual property which is NOT allowed on this forum. Luddite that I am, I certainly will be corrected if I misinterpret your post and porting intact would not be a problem.

Interestingly, you can download the software for free and no terms are mentioned, not on the download page, nor with the package itself.

That said, I am not looking to hack the software or any of the M specific code, I am just looking to install the same application on the Synology.

So I am not infringing, to my knowledge.

Help needed...
I am struggeling to understand, despite all what is written already.
I have a MC200 and not yet a backup system, just as I was thinking to what NAS to buy M offers us the QNAP solution. So I am right on time.
If I get, lets say a 4 bay QNAP then I have the following assumptions, please advise or correct me.

Should get server quality drives in it?
I put my backup on drive 1, and that should be copied to a second drive as RAID1?

For now I have my CD rips on the MC200, when that is full then I rip towards the QNAP and by doing that I just grow my storage?

The fourth drive could be for other application I guess, or is that the back up for my MC200?

On the iPad, do I see then all albums I stored, regardless if they are on the MC or on the NAS?

Why is a RAID 1 NOT a back up, it seems to me as a full copy of the "master" drive?

Why would dBpoweramp be better than the great working MDMS import tool?

Would my rips on the QNAP also be available to my Squeeze box to be used as other zone?

All in all I would have 4 spinning hard drives for MDMS, isn't that a bit much?

Appreciate your help.

I think I can help with some of this, my MC200 is full and so I have a growing collection on my TwinStore. I see it all on my Core control app seamlessly. This should be the same with QNAP.

I have everything backed up to an external drive for extra security of data. This is a MUST for the MC200 data at least.
If the house burns down, I will grab my external drive as I leave.
I don't want to re rip anytime soon.

For extra zones, get an MS200 which plugs into your network and gives full access to all your music without compromising quality, it will improve things in its zone. Sell squeezebox to help fund this.

Thoughts, Chris smile

Because there are more reasons for a backup than protecting against a lost drive...

Virus', accidentally deleted files, incorrectly modified files, bulk modified files, bulk deleted files, enclosure failures...to name but a few.

I think most folks with a 4-bay NAS use RAID5. This spreads the data across all the drives so that if any one fails the data can be retrieved from the other drives. If a second drive fails before you've replaced the first one you'll start to lose data.

My 6-drive Readynas allows for two drives to fail and still be able to retrieve the data.

However, as pointed out, if my house burns down then my data are toast (pun intended) unless I've backed it up offsite.

Drive 2 mirrors Drive 1. If Drive 1 becomes corrupted, a file is deleted, etc., Drive 2 will mirror the problem. RAID 1 is great for safety in case of drive failure, but you should really keep a backup of your data on another drive, preferably off-site.

The QNAP plugin is not aimed at backup, but at extending storage. All music that you store on the NAS and use through the plugin is only stored there.

I typically get the 'green' drives.

As described by others, unless mission critical, the RAID 5 across 3 or more disks is more space efficient with the ability to still rebuild if a disk drops out.

You'd typically rip locally and then upload to a NAS, removing the local copy.

You'd normally put all drives together in one RAID array, maximizing space with resilience.

Yes, inside the core app it will access all the music regardless of where it is stored (MC200 or QNAP NAS with plugin).

As mentioned by the others, it is a one on one copy, and so a backup, but also one done at the exact same time, in synch. So if you mistakenly delete something the 'backup' is also missing that file. So it is only used in case of disk failure, real backups are expected to be store on a different device, ideally in a different location.
Of course, you should also consider that you still have the original CD's. Annoying to rerip, but if the NAS i.e. gets flooded, and both drives are down, you still have the ability to rerip.

I would argue that when MDMS doesn't find the right metadata dBpoweramp is easier to work with. But several other topics on this site discuss it.

My understanding is that the files are all still accessible on a file system level, so can be shared. That is assuming you are not using a specific directory structure for Squeezebox (which I would not expect), as you'll be linked to the M way.

Start with 3, which is the minimum for RAID5. Add a 4th when you need extra space. My suggestion would be to buy the best size \ cost balance drives currently available, probably 3 TB each.

To be totally clear, the "most bodacious" RG was meaning RAID5 (definitely NOT RAID0).
