I actually bought some snake oil the other day;
Crimp Oil. I've just taken up indoor wall climbing and wanted something to provide some relief after bouldering sessions while I'm still building up strength.
The claims made by this manufacturer are completely without scientific foundation - homeopathy at its worst - but I was looking around for a massage oil and was curious.
It is, of course, the act of massage which I find effective for re-invigorating fingers, hands and arm muscles after a climbing session; and unsurprisingly, that's all this oil is: a nice smelling massage oil. I was quite surprised though that there wasn't even a warming effect from the oil of wintergreen (methyl salicylate) - heck, if you were selling this thing, wouldn't you want to give the user the impression that something was "working"?!
Ultimately though, as someone else commented in an on-line review, paracetamol and/or ibuprofen are rather good at reducing inflammation.
