Trifield isn't broken on production 568 firmware though is it?

I agree it doesn't work on the Beta version, but that's beta firmware for you, it's a test non-production version.
I think that's fair enough.

Rick

While that may be true, the 568.2 Beta software offered improved sonics, broken Trifield width excepted.

Happy Trails!

Hi Tom,

prevent/discourage what exactly?

The only thing I'd apply that to would be any more stating of the blindingly obvious that big DSP speakers are hard to get back to a shop. I think we all get that point by now.

VK mentions inconsistency with dealers:-

Some haven't heard anything (a dealer may have to phone HQ)

Some have been out and about visiting users for a modest service fee

Some may have been out and about just for fun

Others may have found other ways to achieve the end result whilst preserving the wishes of the firmware owners.

It's a bit hit and miss I think for the regular user to know exactly what to do.

The only sure thing to say is talk to a dealer.

I'm aware that Trifield isn't Meridian's IP, but their implementation of it is their unique selling point.

I accept that the 2.5 software is beta but as Meridian have chosen to pull all the previous versions I am unable "legitimately" to roll back to the last known good software.

I don't think asking Meridian to fix Trifield width is unreasonable. If the firmware is modular (as I suspect it might be with the same issue being seen in 568.2 beta, G61, G68 and 861) it may be a relatively easy job now, if it's been fixed in the other processors?

Rick, if our only conduit to asking Meridian to do this is through our dealers I would hope that the question migh get relayed back even if it generates the answer we don't want to hear. I would like to think that M are still interested in supporting users of their older products as the best way to keep us intersted in buying their newer kit.

Certainly that would make a signifcant difference to my personal "roadmap" as I contemplate firmware up dates for 6 x DSP5k's and 2 x DSP5kc's with a nearest dealer who is 2 hours away.

Richard

Thread could be renamed ' New firmware now available ...for some ' wink

Dealers can be busy with other things too .

People will continue to get miffed when some are debating the improvements , if any , in one thread while others wait in the wings . Long way from the instant downloads of before and to which people are mostly used in this day and age .

It seems to take up a lot more of both M and their dealers' time than would otherwise be the case . I can't imagine Apple personally supervising the iOS 5.0.1 update even just for the 4million + iPhone 4S purchasers of the opening weekend ?? I imagine the 50 pages of ***p you have to Agree to covers them and means if you've 'Jailbroken ' then it's on you ...

Ok, then shouldn't they finally finish the "Beta" program smile I suspect this had something to do with THX Recertification.

I agree Apodizing might not be supported (even though it could be) they should fix Trifield on such an outstanding Meridian unit. And I think they did say they would.

Imagine the loyalty Meridian would gain if they added Apodizing and Trifield fix for these folks.

Any Meridian device that upsamples can do the Apodizing. It's just a change in the filter parameters. It's not new code.

I agree. The 568 v2.5 "beta" software has been the de facto release software for many years. Trifield should be fixed. Apodizing would be a bonus that would do Meridian's reputation no harm at all - that would definitely be a case of going "above and beyond".

For anyone who has had his G68 upgraded, do you have to re-adjust any settings after the update?

John

I wish I could do the update myself also & would like to know if any settings needed adjusting in the G68 following upgrade. I don't want to lose the benefit of the +3db tweak if at all possible.

Why can't we just download it and agree the terms and conditions like any other manufacturers software updates ?

Also i found this write up of a visit to the Meridian factory in 2007:

http://www.tnt-audio.com/tours/meridian_e.html

Quote:

'When you own a Meridian you can sleep at night, because when we make it better it will be a firmware upgrade, free of charge. We're posting it on our website all the time'. John smiles: 'Most of Meridian consumers are just consumers, but a few of them are real techy geeks. They've got their own website: 'The hitchhikers guide to Meridian'. They'll come to a show one day and whisper 'by the way, I'm a hitchhiker'. They are on the website all day and downloading the latest firmware and experimenting with room correction. Serious enthusiasts, I love them!'

The good old days confused

Cheers

Hi Nick

My question was in response to VKs post

"The problem, as I and the other moderators see it, is inconsistency from dealer to dealer."

Which I didn't fully understand as a response to my post.

I understand the concept of "contact the dealer", but why aren't the dealers actively advertising in the restaurant?

I wasn't sure if this is because the moderators had discouraged this as dealers are inconsistent.

I feel it safe to say that most of us have an idea that the dealers are inconsistent and don't need this validated by moderators so I was checking there wasn't a subtext to his post.

Cheers
Tom

Thanks Tom for clarifying. No subtext at all.

I think most mods have spoken to dealers with the varied results that we've all seen.

My experience has been very positive so far.

My experience is that this update takes some time to upload, especially, if, like myself, you have a series of DSP speakers and processors to update. In a time of austerity, I sympathise with any dealer who cannot afford to work for free, let alone pay for travel costs.

I have a peerless dealer, who was able to act quickly, and effectively for me, though I do keep buying this stuff. Despite some real doubts earlier this year as to where M were going, this update has restored my faith; it is impressive.

Please forgive me my Numptyness but what is in it for me? A house call from your local (if he exists) Dr Meridian at an agreed price must be lower cost than engaging Pickfords. Appologies to many members outside of UK who may not appreciate this reference.
I am only interested in two basic points.
1. Getting the best possible performance from the equipment I have with a clearly available, justified upgrade path to a streaming/storage solution.
2. Protecting the future resale value of my investment to date in the eventuality that I can afford a major hardware upgrade in the future.
So, I kindly ask the experts here for advice on "what is in it for me"
I refrained from posting this for 3 hours but my question has already been answered by RGraham. Thank you for your perception and positive comments in prempting my post.

Another 568.2 owner here who has patiently waited for the broken Trifield to be fixed. I agree with the others who have posted that expecting an apodising update is unrealistic, but to fob off fixing the broken Trifield on the basis that the current firmware is beta is not acceptable to me, especially given the following message relayed by you last year:

This must be incorporated around other tasks - we have many important projects, the Trifield width fix being one of them."

I have discussed this with them more recently and it has not been forgotten.
